Cost Concerns and Range Anxiety: New Poll Reveals Hurdles for EV Adoption in America
High costs deter US citizens from electric vehicles, survey indicates
The allure of electric vehicles (EVs) isn't catching on widely among US residents, who cite expense, worry over battery life, and recharging issues as prime obstacles, a recent survey conducted by the Associated Press–NORC Center for Public Affairs Research in collaboration with the Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago reveals.
A survey conducted from March 26 to April 10, 2024, included 6,265 American adults. Results showed that approximately 40% of those surveyed indicated they were fairly likely to consider an electric vehicle (EV) for their upcoming car acquisition, with 21% expressing a strong likelihood of choosing an EV as their next automobile investment.

The majority of individuals who are disinclined towards electric vehicles point to expense as the main deterrent. This sentiment is in line with prior surveys and research, as the Energy Information Administration (EIA) has linked a decline in electric vehicle purchases at the start of the year to a lack of low-priced options.
According to the Associated Press, price considerations are particularly significant among the elderly population, who generally show less enthusiasm towards electric vehicles compared to the younger generation of buyers. This is backed by earlier studies which highlighted that Generation X and Millennials are leading the charge in EV purchases. Furthermore, a recent poll indicated that America's youth are more receptive to the idea of purchasing electric vehicles from China.

Around 50% of American adults consider the fear of running out of battery power a deterrent from purchasing an electric vehicle, while roughly 40% mentioned that the extended duration required to charge and the insufficient availability of charging facilities in their vicinity are negatives, according to the survey conducted by AP.
The automotive sector frequently references data stating that the lion's share of electric vehicle (EV) owners—85%—primarily charge their cars at home. However, ChargeLab's survey findings highlight that 60% of EV owners who have the capability to charge at home still utilize public charging stations on a weekly basis. The progression of the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) initiative, backed by the federal government, is sluggish, and Tesla has scaled down its expansion of Supercharger stations. Consequently, it is uncertain if the public charging networks will adequately meet the demands of EV users.
