Taiwanese movie icon Wu Kang-ren and vocalist Chiao Anpu's celebratory messages appear to conflict with their earlier critiques of Beijing.
Wu, a filmmaker and actor who has gained popularity in mainland China, recently joined a management company based there, following the release of a highly praised Malaysian movie last month.
Wu shared a piece from the People's Daily, the official publication of the Communist Party, regarding the anniversary.
On Tuesday evening, the artist formerly known as Deserts Chang, now going by Chiao Anpu, shared a handwritten note of congratulations on Weibo, posted by her management team.
Wu and Chiao joined several Taiwanese artists in commemorating the October 1 anniversary. However, they stood out from the rest due to their past involvement in social movements opposing Beijing in both Taiwan and Hong Kong.
