Taiwan’s First Batch of US Abrams Tanks Arrives Amid Modern Warfare Challenges: Can They Withstand PLA’s Advanced Threats?
Taiwan is set to receive its initial shipment of US Abrams tanks following extended delays. While these 38 tanks, expected in December, are considered a step towards enhancing deterrence across the Taiwan Strait, concerns linger about their effectiveness against contemporary threats such as suicide drones.
In 2019, Taiwan received approval to purchase a first set of 108 combat tanks, aiming to strengthen its defenses against potential amphibious assaults amidst rising tensions across the strait.
A delivery of 38 tanks is anticipated to reach its destination in December.
Yet, as modern warfare continues to evolve quickly, several analysts are raising concerns about how effective tanks are when facing new threats like suicide drone attacks.
Reports emerged that the upcoming shipment aligns with Washington's declaration of its most substantial military support package for Taiwan to date, utilizing the Presidential Drawdown Authority (PDA).
