China’s Fragile Poverty Reduction: The Ongoing Struggle Against Relapse in Rural Regions
Are China's Celebrated Achievements in Eradicating Poverty in Danger of Disappearing?
In the expansive rural areas of the country, officials equipped with files on poverty regression are facing challenges in monitoring and assisting those at risk to prevent them from falling back into poverty.
In the city of Zhongwei, located in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region of northwest China, the struggle against poverty appears to be an ongoing challenge.
Nationwide improvements in living standards notwithstanding, in July, the Shapotou district of the city reported the addition of 28 individuals to its watch list for potential poverty relapse.
Authorities responsible for managing the list keep detailed records on families facing severe financial difficulties, with the goal of preventing them from slipping into poverty, while also avoiding their excessive dependence on government aid.
The district has not disclosed the total number of individuals included, but its recent announcements are efforts by the administration to prevent a resurgence of widespread poverty while the economy strives to recover.
The objective is a matter of national importance.
As per the state-run Xinhua News Agency, since President Xi Jinping's ascent to power in 2012, China has allocated approximately 1.6 trillion yuan (around US$306 billion) towards poverty reduction efforts.
