Charging Ahead: Mercedes-Benz Set to Electrify the Market with C-Class EV in 2026
Mercedes-Benz's compact sedan is going electric, set to launch in 2026.
On Friday, according to Autocar, Ola Källenius, the CEO of Mercedes-Benz, announced on the company's Q2 earnings call that they plan to launch the electric version of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class in two years.
Källenius announced that the electric version of the C-Class will be released at the same time as the electric GLC-Class SUV.
The forthcoming electric versions of the C-Class and GLC-Class SUV are set to be launched right after the anticipated electric CLA-Class and its related crossover SUV variant. This upcoming CLA-derived SUV, known internally as X174, is slated to start being manufactured in October 2025 and is reportedly targeting the Tesla Model Y market.
The range of electric vehicles from Mercedes is set to expand rapidly. Electric versions of the C-Class and GLC-Class are targeting the luxury market and will be priced above the CLA-Class and its crossover counterpart.
The upcoming CLA series from Mercedes will be built on the new Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture (MMA), while the electric versions of the C-Class and GLC-Class will utilize the company's MB.EA EV platform. Initially, this electric platform was planned to have two variants, with the MB.EA Small and MB.EA Large catering to different vehicle sizes. The MB.EA Large was intended for the future models of the EQE and EQS, including their SUV counterparts. However, due to a need to reduce expenses in the face of a dip in electric vehicle sales, the development of the MB.EA Large has been halted. Meanwhile, efforts to develop the MB.EA Small are still ongoing.
Test models of the electric version of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class have been seen undergoing road tests in their final design. This electric variant will showcase a design optimized for airflow compared to its combustion engine counterpart, and will incorporate design elements from the soon-to-be-released electric CLA-Class, including its lighting and branding features.
Mercedes has yet to release specific details for the electric C-Class, but it is anticipated to have a driving range that exceeds 300 miles.
