BMW’s Electric Revolution: The Neue Klasse M3 Set to Outperform All with Record Power and Iconic Handling
BMW, the renowned maker of high-performance vehicles, has laid out an ambitious strategy for its upcoming electric vehicles, with plans to create an electric version of the M3 that aims to outperform all competitors.
Efforts are in progress to develop a series of vehicles that will utilize the Neue Klasse platform as their foundation. The M performance branch of BMW is focusing its efforts on developing M series cars derived from these upcoming models. Included in this lineup will be an electric version of the M3, a model that holds significant historical importance within the division.
Frank van Meel, the head of BMW's M division, informed Motor Trend that the forthcoming electric sports car built on the Neue Klasse platform "will surpass anything you've ever witnessed."
Anticipated as a new addition to the broader 3-Series range, the four-door model could potentially bring back the i3 moniker, this time with an M badge.
In 2022, BMW initiated trials on a performance-oriented powertrain equipped with four motors, utilizing an i4 model as its test subject. The company did not disclose the power output of this test vehicle. According to Motor Trend, the forthcoming high-performance model is expected to deliver roughly 1,000 kilowatts, equivalent to 1,341 horsepower. This level of power would position the electric sports sedan as the highest-performing M series car ever produced by BMW. Furthermore, it would surpass the power of almost all other electric vehicles currently available, including the Lucid Air Sapphire and the Tesla Model S Plaid.
BMW is in the process of creating its new line of electric motors, focusing on making them both lighter and smaller in size.
M vehicles prioritize handling and driving experience over sheer force. The transition to electric doesn't seem to change that, even with the high power levels expected from the upcoming electric vehicle. Van Meel informed the publication that the focus would be on ensuring the car handles in a balanced, smooth, and controllable manner, with attention to the handling thresholds and chassis management.
Enthusiasts who favor traditional driving dynamics can rejoice as van Meel has assured that the option for rear-wheel drive will persist into the electric vehicle age, albeit not in conjunction with a quad-motor setup.
Expectations are that the M3 model with electric capabilities will probably be launched between 2026 and 202
