BMW Partners with University of Zagreb to Enhance Battery Development through AI Innovation

In collaboration with specialists from the University of Zagreb, the aim is to discover cutting-edge approaches
BMW Group and the University of Zagreb have initiated a joint research effort focused on enhancing battery cell manufacturing with the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The partnership aims to streamline and reduce the costs of battery cell production through the creation of collaborative solutions.
Within this partnership, PhD candidates and university students from Zagreb gather and organize existing production data. This information is employed to develop AI models capable of identifying specific patterns within the data. The goal is to use these insights to predict how production can be enhanced in terms of efficiency, quality, and cost-effectiveness.
The BMW Group is consolidating its expertise in battery cell production at its centers of excellence located in Munich and Parsdorf. The Battery Cell Competence Center (BCCC) situated in the north of Munich focuses on the development and limited production of battery cells for the upcoming generations of high-voltage batteries. This is complemented by the Cell Manufacturing Competence Center (CMCC) in Parsdorf, which is responsible for scaling up the optimal battery cells from the BCCC for mass production processes.
Mutually Beneficial Arrangement
The University of Zagreb contributes its specialized knowledge in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and computer science to the project. The ongoing exchange of knowledge between the collaborating partners enhances the innovation and competitiveness of both entities. Zdenko Tonković, the Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture at the University of Zagreb, highlights that the university offers BMW Group access to the latest research findings and inventive concepts, while students gain the chance to apply their theoretical understanding in a practical setting.
Promoting Emerging Talent as a Priority
A key element of this partnership is the emphasis on nurturing new talent. Moritz Poremba, Head of Battery Cell Technology Development Recycling at BMW Group, points out that the collaborative project aims to spark student interest in BMW Group and the cutting-edge work happening at the Battery Cell Competence Centers. The students stand to gain from dedicated mentorship and the opportunity to expand their professional connections within the industry, enhancing their job market appeal and opening up outstanding career prospects.
