BMW M5 (2024) enthüllt: Ein Power-Paket mit 727 PS und neuem Design – Alles über die neueste Performance-Limousine und den M5 Touring
The latest BMW M5 (2024) makes its debut boasting 727 horsepower and a hefty weight of over 2.4 tons. At launch, this V8 plug-in hybrid will also be available in an M5 Touring version. The anticipation has reached fever pitch amid wild teasers and rampant speculation. BMW only fueled the excitement by revealing early on the return of the M5 Touring model. Now, the wait is over. Introducing the new BMW M5 Sedan (G90).
What we're witnessing is a striking departure from everything that previously defined an M5. There's a bold, sharp edge that completely eschews any form of restraint in its design. This is coupled with the introduction of electric power to the iconic sport sedan, which consequently brings a heft that's likely to bring a tear to the eye of enthusiasts and fans globally. We've had the chance to inspect this new entry up close and we're here to tell you what to expect.

Powertrain
The notable heft of this vehicle, tipping scales beyond 2.5 tons with the driver included, is a hot topic of conversation, particularly due to the introduction of the new plug-in hybrid powertrain. Enthusiasts of the M series are already familiar with the potent combination of a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 and a constantly excited synchronous electric motor from the colossal SUV XM. In the latest M5, this duo delivers a combustion engine output of 585 horsepower and an electric motor with 197 horsepower, together producing a total system power of 727 horsepower and 1,000 Nm of torque.
And why go to all this trouble, even with the painful disadvantage of added weight? After all, the new M5 is an astonishing 500 kilograms heavier than its predecessor. Well, what I consistently hear from the engineers during my visit is that with a purely combustion engine, they would have been significantly less powerful than the previous M5 due to emission regulations, and that's something you can't justify to most customers.
To add to the discussion, imagine a future where a new Mercedes-AMG E 63 and an upcoming Audi RS 7 hit the market, both equipped with hybrid engines boasting over 700 horsepower. In such a scenario, BMW with its 585 horsepower would seem quite underwhelming. It's not an ideal situation by any means, but that's simply the nature of the industry.
Regardless of its increased weight, the car's performance remains impressively powerful. However, it's worth noting that its predecessor had a quicker acceleration. The plug-in M5 reaches 0-100 km/h in 3.5 seconds, a tad slower than the previous M5 Competition's 3.3 seconds, and the M5 CS's 3.0 seconds. It hits 200 km/h in 10.9 seconds, with the M5 CS again edging it out by half a second. The top speed is capped at 250 km/h but can be optionally increased to 305 km/h.
Power is transmitted through an 8-speed automatic transmission to all four wheels. Even in the new era of electric vehicles, there is a 4WD Sport mode which allows the four-wheel drive system to be more rear-biased. Additionally, the well-known 2WD mode is available, which, with the ESP turned off, enables pure rear-wheel drive and allows for smoky drifting.

The primary cause for the additional weight is a battery with a net capacity of 18.6 kWh, positioned flat within the floor of the car. It can travel up to 69 kilometers solely on electric power. The charging capacity reaches up to 7.4 kW, with an upgrade to 11 kW available later on. This can be achieved through an update.
The Munich-based company has equipped their latest hybrid flagship with up to five different operating modes. The standard modes include Hybrid, Electric, and the eControl mode, which maintains the charge level. Additionally, there are two optional modes available: Dynamic and Dynamic Plus, both designed for racetrack use. These modes adjust the cooling system and system performance accordingly, with Dynamic offering sustained consistency and Dynamic Plus providing a short burst of maximum output.
Driving Dynamics
Familiar with various M-series models, the latest M5 comes equipped with a substantial range of supplementary braces and reinforcement panels aimed at enhancing its torsional rigidity. This is complemented by a more rigid connection of the chassis to the body and the steering system that is firmly bolted to the front axle carrier.
The G90 is equipped with a double wishbone front axle and a multi-link rear axle. Each features specially designed control arms, more rigid bearings, and a more precise axle kinematics. You may have noticed from the images that it boasts a much more muscular shoulder compared to the standard 5 series. Indeed, BMW has ventured into wide-body design for the first time, which naturally results in wider track widths.
Preview of the 2024 BMW M5 Model
Standard features include an adaptive M suspension and, for the first time in an M5, a rear-wheel steering system capable of angles up to 1.5 degrees. This feature assists in virtually reducing the size and weight of what has become quite a substantial performance sedan.
The vehicle comes standard with a steel braking system featuring six-piston calipers at the front and single-piston sliding calipers at the rear. The disc sizes measure 410 and 398 millimeters respectively. For an additional cost, the Munich-based company offers carbon-ceramic brakes with 420-mm discs at the front, which reduce the overall weight by 25 kilograms.
Exterior
It's clear for all to see that the era of restrained subtlety has come to a close with the M5. The latest model shatters familiar boundaries and makes a bold visual statement. It's likely that the design won't appeal to everyone, but I'm going to take a risk and extend my congratulations to the design team. It really makes an impact, particularly in the new Frozen Deep Grey metallic paint.
Upcoming 2024 BMW M5 Model.
Believe it or not, the latest M5 sedan measures 5.09 meters in length and 1.97 meters in width. Compared to the standard 5 series, the front of the vehicle extends an additional 78 millimeters, while the rear expands by 45 millimeters. The attractive curves of the vehicle are not crudely attached but are instead subtly integrated into the bodywork. The grille presents itself in a shiny black and is almost entirely enclosed.
The aprons also stand out prominently. At the front, there's a notably large air intake with a distinct black trim, and at the rear, there is an immense diffuser that protrudes boldly and three-dimensionally from the bumper, also featuring black detailing. BMW refers to it as a monolithic design. I believe that's an apt description.
The standard wheels for the series are 20 inches in the front and 21 inches in the rear. The tire sizes are 285/40 ZR20 in the front and 295/35 ZR21 in the rear. It's somewhat unusual for a sports sedan to include a panoramic glass roof as standard, but there's an option to get a carbon roof that's 30 kilograms lighter as part of the carbon package. For those who check all the boxes for weight reduction, the M5's weight can be reduced by roughly 60 kilograms, bringing its unladen weight down to around 2,370 kilograms. The four exhaust pipes each have a diameter of 100 millimeters.
Interior
A glance inside reveals an option for a rather sporty and bold atmosphere. The photos display the newly available metallic leather with a subtle shimmer effect on the upper part of the seats and the door panels. A black interior comes as standard. There are also three two-tone options to choose from, with an additional two two-tone combinations set to be introduced in 2025.
The latest steering wheel design features a flattened bottom and, as expected, includes the signature red M buttons for accessing preset driving mode configurations. The paddle shifters are designed in black with red highlights.
The standard features include a four-zone automatic climate control, a stationary air conditioning system, and an 18-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system.
The latest M5 model features the new Operating System 8.5 for controls. It sports the familiar curved display, which combines a 12.3-inch instrument panel and a 14.9-inch infotainment screen, both equipped with M-specific graphics and displays, as well as a head-up display.
The capacity of the trunk is 466 liters, and the maximum towing weight is 2,000 kilograms.
Launch and Pricing
BMW is set to commence the manufacturing of the M5 model in July at the Dingolfing plant. The vehicle is slated for market release in November 2024. Interestingly, this release will coincide with that of the M5 Touring model, which will be fully revealed to the public in mid-August. Pricing for the sedan version starts at 144,000 Euros, with the estate variant costing an additional 2,000 Euros.
