Aprilia’s Future Takes Shape: Vinales’ Pivotal Decision and the Search for Espargaro’s Successor
Aprilia's head provides an update on Maverick Vinales' upcoming plans
Who is set to team up with Jorge Martin at Aprilia in the coming season?
The focus has shifted to the available factory Aprilia seat following the confirmation that MotoGP frontrunner Jorge Martin will replace the retiring Aleix Espargaro.
Since joining forces as team-mates with Espargaro in the middle of 2021, Maverick Vinales has climbed to the forefront of Aprilia's racing efforts. Motivated by securing his inaugural Grand Prix victory on an Aprilia earlier in the year, Vinales now leads as the premier RS-GP competitor, holding the sixth position in the overall rankings.
Should Vinales surpass Espargaro to become the top Aprilia racer in the season's overall rankings, it might symbolize an apt transition of leadership to #12.
Amid discussions about pursuing an Italian racer, securing Vinales for the period following Espargaro was the primary objective for Aprilia Racing CEO Massimo Rivola, even before finalizing Martin's agreement.
"Rivola expressed that the main focus should be on deciphering Maverick's intentions. He added that if Maverick chooses to remain, it would make him the most joyful," Rivola noted, following the recent announcement of Martin's contract signing.
"Rivola further stated that if Maverick continues with the team, he will assume the role of 'Capitano.' This is due to his significant contributions during Aprilia's challenging times, elevating the team's performance, and introducing a novel approach to handling the bike, setting him apart from Aleix."
Therefore, the search for an Italian 'home' star is currently paused, awaiting Vinales' choice.
"If Maverick isn't part of our team – and I'm contemplating this possibility – then I acknowledge there are numerous Italian riders who are incredibly capable. However, this isn't our top priority."
Despite having his strongest opening with Aprilia, Vinales has remained tight-lipped regarding his plans for 2025.
"Vinales stated, “I'm committed to making choices that favor my professional growth. Despite everything, my pace hasn't slowed down. I've got plenty of speed, and following the Austin race, it's become evident how quick I can be once everything aligns.”
Currently, my dedication is completely focused on Aprilia without a doubt. I'm truly dedicating myself to every race weekend, aiming to have a great season moving forward.
"Regarding what lies ahead, I remain uncertain."
"I genuinely believe my choice will be entirely based on performance alone."
Although 'absolute performance' may have dismissed the option of moving to Honda, Vinales might still be faced with the decision of remaining with Aprilia, opting for a satellite Ducati slot – such as the one at Pramac currently leading with Martin – or choosing a satellite KTM position.
Before the formal announcement of Martin's contract with RS-GP was made, Vinales minimized the idea of instantly becoming Aprilia's lead rider for the upcoming season.
"Vinales expressed uncertainty about his future, particularly whether it will involve Aprilia. He emphasized, however, the significant role Aleix holds within Aprilia."
"Aleix has spent several years at Aprilia, where he's shouldered significant responsibility and performed admirably."
Meanwhile, Espargaro appears poised for an impending move to Honda in the role of a test rider for 2025, a decision that caught Vinales off guard.
Rivola humorously suggested that, given his direct involvement in successfully securing Vinales and now Martin for Aprilia, Espargaro might be considered for a role as an assistant!
"Rivola mentioned that he definitely showcased Aprilia effectively [to Vinales and Martin]. He highlighted that Aleix has a genuine approach, openly discussing both the positives and negatives."
"However, I prefer to believe that Martin's selection of Aprilia was due to the brand's steady progress over these years. We stand out as the sole manufacturer to have won races this year, offering a viable alternative to his existing Ducati motorcycle."
