Aprilia Sets High Stakes with Jorge Martin Signing: ‘No More Excuses,’ Says CEO Rivola
Aprilia Racing CEO Massimo Rivola stated that the team will no longer have any excuses following the addition of Jorge Martin.
When it was clear that championship leader Jorge Martin wouldn't be picked over Marc Marquez for the factory Ducati spot in 2025, Aprilia moved swiftly.
Last week, the Italian company secured Martin's signature shortly after the Italian MotoGP event at Mugello, and made the announcement just 30 minutes after finalizing the deal.
Martin, who had long aspired to join Francesco Bagnaia on the factory Ducati team, has now fulfilled his dream of becoming a full factory rider, albeit with Aprilia, which has recently emerged as Ducati's nearest rival.
Reflecting on the decision to sign Martin and the reasons behind choosing the Spanish rider, Massimo Rivola stated, "We aimed to secure a top-tier rider since Aleix Espargaro is concluding his career with us, and he deserved the best possible successor."
"He played a key role in getting Jorge to join us. I believe Jorge competed for the title last year, he will compete for it this year, and we aim to compete next year with our own bike."
"Let's find out if we can become a superstar duo with Maverick Vinales. We are excited and inspired."
Martin, currently ahead in the world championship by 18 points, has the opportunity to clinch the title in his last season with Pramac Ducati. If he succeeds, he would carry the #1 plate over to Aprilia.
Rumors from the previous season suggested that Ducati would have elevated Martin's status if he had secured the world championship. Therefore, it would be a significant blow for Ducati if Martin wins the title while riding for Aprilia.
Regardless of whether he secures the championship, Aprilia made a bold move by signing Martin, and Rivola states that starting in 2025, there will be no excuses.
"This is incredibly thrilling," stated the CEO of Aprilia Racing. "The key takeaway for the company is that we can no longer make excuses, and that's why it's crucial to have another rider like Maverick, who currently serves as our benchmark."
"Let's wait and see how things turn out, but I'm definitely very pleased with it."
