Aprilia Sets High Stakes with Jorge Martin Signing: No More Excuses in MotoGP’s Future Races
Aprilia Racing's CEO, Massimo Rivola, declares "we'll run out of excuses" following the acquisition of Jorge Martin.
Upon realizing that Jorge Martin, the frontrunner for the MotoGP championship, was not going to be selected over Marc Marquez for the primary Ducati spot in 2025, Aprilia swiftly took action.
Last week, after the Italian MotoGP in Mugello, the Italian manufacturer finalized a deal with Martin, officially declaring his inclusion in the team 30 minutes after the agreement was signed.
Martin, who longed to join Francesco Bagnaia as a part of the Ducati team, has now fulfilled his dream of becoming a primary factory rider, albeit with Aprilia, Ducati's recent top rival.
Talking about their decision to bring Martin on board and their preference for the Spanish rider, Massimo Rivola stated, "Our goal was to secure a leading rider because Aleix [Espargaro] is ending his professional journey with us, and it was crucial for us to find the most outstanding rider to follow him."
"He genuinely assisted us in recruiting Jorge. I believe Jorge competed for the championship last year, he's set to compete again this year, and we aim to compete next year, but on our motorcycle.
"We'll attempt to form the ultimate duo with Maverick [Vinales]. Nonetheless, we're content and driven."
Martin, currently ahead in the global championship standings by 18 points, has the chance to clinch the world title in his concluding season with Pramac Ducati, a victory that would allow him to transition to Aprilia as the reigning champion.
Last year, rumors within the racing circuit suggested that Ducati was poised to elevate Martin if he had secured the world championship, so seeing him move to Aprilia would sting, especially if Martin ends up winning the championship.
Regardless of his success in clinching the championship, acquiring Martin was a significant move for Aprilia, and Rivola emphasizes that from 2025 onwards, there will be no room for excuses.
"The enthusiasm is immense," the CEO of Aprilia Racing shared. "The takeaway for our organization is clear: there are no more justifications, and that's precisely why it's crucial to bring on board another competitor like Maverick, who currently sets the benchmark for us."
"Excited to see what unfolds, but clearly thrilled about it."
