Aprilia Downplays ‘American Rider’ Speculation for 2025 MotoGP Amidst Joe Roberts’ Moto2 Success
Aprilia dismisses the idea of having an American rider in an American team for MotoGP 2025
Massimo Rivola: "I doubt that will happen"
California native Joe Roberts secured his initial Moto2 win of the season at Mugello, narrowing the gap to just 7 points behind the world championship leader, Sergio Garcia.
However, during the MotoGP test the next day, Aprilia Racing CEO Massimo Rivola minimized the likelihood of the satellite Trackhouse team featuring an American rider for the upcoming season.
Rivola expressed doubt, suggesting that the situation is unlikely because the market currently provides us with excellent MotoGP riders.
Rivola reaffirmed the viewpoint of team principal Davide Brivio, emphasizing that Trackhouse's main focus for 2025 is to achieve the highest results, rather than functioning as a developmental team for Aprilia.
Rivola mentioned that, in an interview, Davide stated that Trackhouse is not considering bringing in a junior rider to develop for Aprilia racing, and Rivola concurs with this view.
"We should now enter the market, which is evolving rapidly, as demonstrated by our quick signing of Jorge Martin. Our goal is to select the top riders available for our four motorcycles."
Several MotoGP race winners, including former world champion Joan Mir, who previously rode for Suzuki under Brivio and now races for Repsol Honda, have yet to secure new contracts.
If Roberts can maintain his current performance in Moto2, it will enhance his argument for being considered one of the top riders for Trackhouse in 2025.
Pramac Ducati's championship front-runner, Jorge Martin, is the sole Aprilia rider officially signed for 2025. Meanwhile, factory team victor Maverick Vinales and the Trackhouse pair, Miguel Oliveira and Raul Fernandez, have yet to secure their positions.
Rivola mentioned that he and Davide are, so to speak, on the same page and share similar opinions regarding the riders.
"Trackhouse has a promising outlook as they are also targeting the technician market for the upcoming year."
"They are going to select the riders."
"Of course, I'll express my opinion. Additionally, they have talented riders who, in my view, haven't yet demonstrated their full capabilities. So, we'll have to wait and see."
