Aprilia Confirms Aleix Espargaro’s Departure Amidst Major Roster Shakeup; Jorge Martin Joins as New MotoGP Leader
Aprilia has announced that Aleix Espargaro wishes to pursue a new opportunity and is expected to depart from the team to take on a test rider position with Honda.
On Monday, Aprilia announced that they have signed MotoGP championship frontrunner Jorge Martin to replace Aleix Espargaro, who is set to retire soon.
Even though Martin is one of Espargaro's best friends, his inclusion is not anticipated to influence Espargaro's choice to depart for Honda, an announcement that is expected shortly.
"It's a valid argument, but I believe Aleix would prefer a new challenge," Massimo Rivola remarked to MotoGP.com.
"He has completed his journey with us and believes he has accomplished what he set out to do. Although he may seek greater challenges in the future, I wish him all the best."
Regarding their secondary factory position at Aprilia, Rivola aims to retain Maverick Vinales alongside Martin.
Rivola stated, "Maverick is a key piece of the larger plan and is a top priority for me. Regrettably, due to the tight schedule and the hurried nature of events, I made a mistake by not taking the time to talk to him."
Aprilia's Rivola has stated their interest in Enea Bastianini and Marco Bezzecchi, while also emphasizing his intention to retain Vinales.
"Yes, definitely, and they are all excellent riders," Rivola commented when questioned about Bastianini and Bezzecchi. "We'll see, but Maverick would be the main focus."
Following Espargaro's departure from Aprilia, the team is once again confronted with the task of integrating a new rider, Martin, and ensuring he quickly adjusts to the RS-GP, a challenge they have encountered for multiple seasons.
However, Rivola anticipates that the highly skilled Spaniard will adjust rapidly: “I believe we are widely acknowledged as a competent team.
"Everyone has a positive outlook, and how well he adapts remains uncertain. However, considering his skill level and riding technique, I believe he will adjust quickly."
