Alfa Romeo’s Junior EV Crossover Eyes U.S. Market: Potential Stateside Debut and Competitive Edge Explored
The potential launch of Alfa Romeo's inaugural electric vehicle, the Junior crossover, in the American market is under deliberation, as per the information from Automotive News Europe.
The Junior, initially introduced in April as the Milano, had its name promptly altered by Alfa Romeo following an Italian regulation that prohibits the naming of products after Italian cities if they are not produced within the country. The production of the Junior is planned to take place in Poland. Despite earlier statements by Alfa Romeo indicating no intentions to market the Junior in the U.S., the company will now present the vehicle to American dealers to assess their response, according to product chief Daniel Tiago Guzzafame in a conversation with Automotive News Europe.
Should it receive approval for sale in the United States, the Junior might not be available across all states. According to Guzzafame, Alfa Romeo is considering launching the car in California and Florida, both of which have strong electric vehicle markets, along with other states that adhere to California's emissions regulations.

The Junior model shares its foundational eCMP2 structure with the Jeep Avenger and Fiat 600, models that aren't scheduled for release in the United States. These vehicles are designed to fit European size preferences, which tend to be smaller in comparison to American standards. The Junior measures 164 inches in length, making it about 14 inches more compact than the Alfa Romeo Tonale, a plug-in hybrid crossover that currently represents the most accessible offering from the automaker in the American market.
The design of this vehicle allows for both traditional gas engines and fully electric systems. While the Junior model will be available in Europe as both an electric vehicle (EV) and a mild-hybrid, the United States is only looking at bringing in the Junior Veloce, which is the strongest among the electric options, as per a report by Automotive News Europe.
In the European market, the solo-engine Junior Veloce produces 281 horsepower, which allows it to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 5.9 seconds, reaching a maximum velocity of 124 mph. Although the official figures are still pending, it's anticipated that Alfa Romeo's Junior Veloce will deliver a WLTP range of 205 miles, utilizing the identical 54-kWh battery pack found in the less performance-oriented Junior EV variants.

The exact cost of the Junior in the American market remains unknown, but its price tag in Italy kicks off at 52,000 euros, which covers delivery and a sales tax of 22%, as reported by Automotive News Europe. If converted to U.S. dollars, this would approximately amount to $42,000.
The Junior might be more cost-effective compared to its competitors in the small luxury electric vehicle segment, the 2025 Mini Cooper electric and the 2025 Volvo EX30, because it is manufactured in Poland instead of China. This geographical difference means that it faces a lower import duty of only 2.5%, while the Mini and Volvo are taxed at a hefty 102.5%, as pointed out by Automotive News Europe. However, this price benefit could be short-lived as competitors might revise their strategies to mitigate the impact of the tariffs. Volvo, for instance, has postponed the American introduction of the EX30 to the following year as it shifts its production base from China to Ghent, Belgium in response to the tariff issue.
