Yamaha’s Optimism Soars as Quartararo Secures Q2 Spot and New Chassis Shows Promise at San Marino MotoGP
Yamaha outlines their chassis strategy following Fabio Quartararo's impressive Q2 performance
Yamaha's response to Friday's events at the San Marino MotoGP
A promising Friday at Misano for Yamaha had Fabio Quartararo performing well enough to secure a spot in Q2.
On Friday, during the practice sessions for the San Marino MotoGP, Quartararo recorded the ninth-best time.
It is an uncommon moment of hope for the embattled Japanese producer.
“It was a promising beginning to the San Marino race weekend, particularly for Fabio,” stated team leader Massimo Meregalli.
He felt great from the start of this morning's FP1 session. Aiming for a top 10 finish in practice, he gave it his all to achieve that goal.
"It's a positive outcome: securing a spot in Q2 straight away will certainly benefit him for the rest of the weekend."
"He and Alex both tested out a new chassis today. They each provided favorable feedback, so the intention is to continue using it over the next two days."
"Alex's lap times have gotten better since the private Misano test. We'll look over the data and adjust the bike's settings tonight, aiming to help him improve further in FP2 tomorrow morning."
Quartararo stated, "We realized it would be challenging after this morning."
"I was in P5, but it's important to remember that only Honda and we had prior testing experience at this location."
"I anticipated a challenging afternoon, but ultimately, we secured a spot in the top 10. That was our objective, so I'm quite pleased."
"The new chassis we tested today seems to have improved performance slightly. We're optimistic that we'll discover additional grip by experimenting with a few different approaches tomorrow."
Alex Rins, who was in 17th place on Friday, commented, "We tested a new chassis, and it performed pretty well."
“It’s challenging to draw a direct comparison since the traction has improved now, but today I managed to ride one second quicker than I did in the test.”
"Today, the bike definitely performed better. It could also be that I was in a testing mindset earlier, which meant I wasn't pushing as hard as I typically do on a Grand Prix weekend."
"Regardless, this chassis performed slightly better, but we are still facing some challenges. We combined the setup from our testing with the one we used in Aragon, but it didn't produce the results I was expecting."
"It was alright, but there is plenty of room for improvement."
Yamaha is encouraged by securing the Pramac satellite team, which will become part of their lineup in 2025.
Bringing Miguel Oliveira on board (and likely Jack Miller soon) will give Yamaha two seasoned riders whose insights can help speed up their development process.
