Unseen Footage Sheds Light on Jorge Martin’s Pitlane Blunder at San Marino MotoGP
Jorge Martin discloses fresh rationale behind pitlane choice following an unexpected surprise
Recently unveiled video offers a different viewpoint
Newly uncovered video footage sheds light on why Jorge Martin made the ill-fated choice to head into the pits during the recent San Marino MotoGP race last weekend.
Martin quickly responded to the onset of rain by being the first to enter the pitlane for a tyre swap.
The strategy failed when the track quickly became dry, resulting in Martin falling to 15th place. Meanwhile, his competitors for the championship, Marc Marquez, who took the victory, and Pecco Bagnaia, who finished second, were able to advance in the standings.
After the event, Martin found solace in his garage, someone comforting him with the words, “That's just the way it is, buddy…”
He replied, "Following that, I was stuck, I had to pause. I wasn't able to overtake anyone unless I was given the go-ahead to proceed."
"Subsequently, with Vinales trailing, I came to a halt. However, I picked up speed afterwards."
It's a single point. Darn!
"I could easily complete laps in just over one minute and thirty-five seconds."
Recently unveiled video captures an intimate conversation between Martin and Bagnaia that took place just after the conclusion of the race.
"Pecco, come on… seriously," Martin said, nearly at a loss for words.
Bagnaia responded, "I noticed your move and thought, 'what in the world is he up to!'"
Martin disclosed his anticipation that Bagnaia would be the first to make a pit stop. He explained, "The rain was coming down heavily. I assumed 'since he extended his leg, he's going to pull over…'"
Bagnaia elaborated, "I desired to make contact."
Martin: “However, when I stepped outside, the rain had stopped. Nope!”
Bagnaia remarked, "The weather is capable of shifting instantly."
Freshly released video reveals Bagnaia in a private discussion with his team's engineers as Marquez is seen celebrating in the backdrop.
Bagnaia received a message saying: "Damn, if you had entered the pitlane, we would have been in trouble!"
The Grand Prix motorcycle racing titleholder remarked, "Fortunately, we avoided that."
Bagnaia was questioned, "Had it crossed your mind?"
He mentioned, "It didn't have the scent of rain."
