Yamaha’s Mugello Misfortune: Oliveira-Quartararo Clash Sparks Debate on Racing Ambitions
Yamaha Comments on Oliveira, Quartararo Incident: 'Nearly Over the Line, Somewhat Overzealous'
During the Mugello Sprint skirmish, Miguel Oliveira and Fabio Quartararo were involved in a collision. Yamaha remarked, "The incident was almost too much. In our view, Miguel's approach was somewhat overzealous."
Fabio Quartararo's race in the Italian MotoGP Sprint was cut short on the second lap after a collision with Miguel Oliveira led both riders off the track and into the gravel.
The man from France, who was in 14th position at the end of the first lap, stated:
"I had a brief conversation with Miguel. Naturally, he applied the brakes too late, erred, and we ended up colliding. However, such incidents are bound to occur.
"I wasn't able to gather any details about the race… We'll figure out our next steps tomorrow."
The FIM Stewards concluded that the crash was a competitive mishap, deciding against any additional measures. This determination was also made regarding the incident involving Jorge Martin and Enea Bastianini.
It is believed that Quartararo met with the Stewards following the race.
The individual from France wasn't aiming for Oliveira to be penalized but aimed to emphasize that during the 2022 Assen race, he was given a long lap penalty for his 'overly ambitious' overtaking move on Aleix Espargaro, despite the fact that the Aprilia rider managed to stay upright and didn't crash.
Monster Yamaha's team leader, Massimo Meregalli, described the Oliveira situation as 'borderline' and, seemingly not by chance, chose the term 'ambitious'.
"Meregalli expressed disappointment over Fabio's competition being cut short today, yet relieved that he wasn't injured," Meregalli conveyed. "The crash was rather marginal. In our view, Miguel's maneuvers seemed overly aggressive."
Consequently, Alex Rins was the sole Yamaha rider to cross the finish line, securing the 13th position.
"Rins mentioned, 'The sensation I had with the motorcycle today varied slightly compared to Friday. I found it somewhat more challenging to maneuver the bike and achieve traction."
"We must put in the effort to comprehend the reasons behind this. It's essential that we identify an aspect of the motorcycle that will help us bridge the distance."
