Smoke and Strategy: Marquez’s Ducati Drama Explained as Bastianini Shines at Mugello
Investigated: Source of Smoke from Marc Marquez’s Motorcycle after ‘What Went Wrong?’ Question
Explanation provided for the smoke coming from Marc Marquez’s Ducati
Marc Marquez's team leader has clarified why smoke was coming out of his Ducati during the Italian MotoGP.
Gresini's Marquez failed to secure a spot on the podium at Mugello on Sunday, following an exceptional performance by Enea Bastianini.
Bastianini overtook both Marquez and Jorge Martin to climb from fourth place to second, trailing only the winner, Pecco Bagnaia.
Frankie Carchedi, who serves as Marquez's crew chief, was questioned by TNT Sports about what had gone awry.
Carchedi responded, saying, “We always excelled coming out of the final turn.”
"Despite the build-up, I've witnessed numerous events. There was a small amount of smoke."
"Marc altered his path, encountering a significant bump in his effort to exit swiftly."
"That's the origin of the smoke; there was no other source."
"He attempted to gain momentum, but unfortunately, he couldn't manage to overtake Enea."
"The temperature of the front tire was extremely high."
Carchedi summed up Marquez's performance at Mugello as "mixed," noting that he earned valuable points.
"In general, we closed the gap on the leader at a track that isn't among his best."
"He was simply pleased to remain competitive throughout the entire weekend."
Sylvain Guintoli summarized Marquez’s performance over the weekend as “solid and impressive, but falling just short of the mark.”
Marquez holds the third position in the MotoGP rankings, trailing the leader Martin by 35 points.
Bastianini impresses with remarkable performance despite challenging conditions
Starting from fourth place, Bastianini managed to secure second position at Mugello.
In the final moments, he skillfully passed Marquez.
Neil Hodgson, speaking on TNT Sports, commented: "The key factor was traction. He possesses a unique skill when the tires reach optimal temperature. He relies heavily on his body movements."
"How impressive was that pass? It doesn't get much better."
"You overtake the most aggressive rider without giving them any space, but it was a clean move."
"He managed to keep the eight-time world champion at bay. Marc struggled to make the turn, which caused him to go wide and opened up an opportunity for Enea."
"He finished just 0.7 seconds after the winner."
Bastianini had frequently faced challenges at his hometown event.
He came back this year, but he is expected to lose his Ducati seat for 2025, potentially to Martin or Marquez.
However, when it was crucial, he performed better than both of his competitors during the race.
Hodgson remarked, "When you participate in a race in your home country, there's added pressure, and you might push yourself 1% harder…"
“I’m pleased for him. He’s been under a lot of stress.
"It feels terrible when no one is even considering you for a spot next year."
