Raul Fernandez to Undergo Arm Pump Surgery Following Mugello MotoGP Test
Raul Fernandez: Surgery Scheduled for Tuesday
Raul Fernandez reveals plans to undergo arm pump surgery following the Mugello test.
Raul Fernandez has announced that he is scheduled to have arm pump surgery right after the post-race MotoGP test at Mugello on Monday.
The Trackhouse Aprilia racer, who has undergone surgery on his right arm before, revealed that he has been quietly dealing with the problem in recent races, such as his career-best performance, finishing sixth in Catalunya.
Following medical examinations that revealed an issue, the young Spanish individual opted to take advantage of the prolonged interval between the Mugello and Assen events, which was caused by the delay of the Kazakhstan race.
Fernandez, who placed 12th in the Italian MotoGP on Sunday, mentioned that he has been battling arm pump since the start of the year. He added that it was particularly challenging that day and announced he would need to have surgery again the following Tuesday.
"Today, particularly during the final seven laps, it was extremely challenging to maintain control of the bike due to this issue. I did my best to complete the race, but it was tough. I'm relieved that we now have a fix for this problem."
Looking ahead, I'm confident everything will turn out well. I hope the surgery leads to improvements because, during today's race, I had to conserve a lot of energy for the final stretch and was overly focused on my right arm.
"Overall, I'm pleased with this seventh round – my team has faith in me, and I have faith in them. Each day, we're inching closer to the factory Aprilia bikes, and despite my arm issues, we managed to stay close to Aleix Espargaro and Maverick Viñales."
Fernandez, currently riding the 2023 model of the Aprilia, is set to test the 2024 version on Monday. This test is in anticipation of transitioning to the updated bike after the summer break, although he will still need to use his existing engine specification.
Team principal Davide Brivio stated that the test is crucial for Raul, as he will be evaluating the 2024 bike once more. This time, they intend to delve deeper into the specifics since it will be the final chance before Raul begins using it.
Fernandez wasn't the only rider experiencing physical challenges at Mugello on Sunday; Monster Yamaha riders Fabio Quartararo and Alex Rins also struggled with the 'heavy' sensation of their downforce-heavy bikes.
Quartararo, who ended up in 18th place and did not score any points, believes that the M1 requires a technical adjustment instead of surgical intervention.
"The race was extremely challenging, particularly in terms of physical endurance," stated the French competitor, who has previously had surgery on his forearm. "I experienced a problem with my arm, which made it difficult for me to perform effectively during the final ten laps."
"It's not a case of arm pump; my arm is simply at its limit when we ride on this kind of track."
"We anticipated better results from this race. We face difficulties when the traction is insufficient. We're hopeful that we can discover a way to make the bike more manageable."
"We have certain strategies prepared for tomorrow's test to address one of our vulnerabilities. If these measures prove effective, I believe they will also improve the physical demands of riding."
