Pecco Bagnaia’s Masterclass: Perfect Strategy Leads to Dominant Italian MotoGP Victory
Pecco Bagnaia flawlessly follows his plan: "Achieving more was out of reach"
Francesco Bagnaia reveals that his tactic was to seize the lead in the Italian MotoGP by the second corner, stating that accomplishing anything beyond that "was impossible".
Similar to his performance in Qatar, MotoGP world champion Francesco Bagnaia had an impressive launch from the second row, quickly taking command of the race.
Bagnaia quickly advanced from fifth to first place within just two turns and maintained the lead for the entirety of the race, finishing in the top spot.
Bagnaia faced increased pressure with three laps remaining as Martin closed the gap to three-tenths of a second for the first time since the opening lap.
Despite the setback, the current world champion made a strong comeback, extending his lead back to one second.
After his victory, Bagnaia shared: "The day began positively because I got a message from a legendary figure. He told me that today, I would likely come out on top."
"It was amazing. I'm extremely happy, content, and proud. This weekend was wonderful. I had a strong start in the race and yesterday was outstanding."
"Being at the front in the first lap today was crucial for setting my speed. The plan for the first couple of turns worked flawlessly. Anything beyond that was out of reach."
The 'legend' Bagnaia mentioned was Gene Simmons from the rock band Kiss. The importance of this lies in the fact that Bagnaia celebrated his victories at Mugello by playing an electric guitar.
Having now secured his third victory at the Italian circuit, Bagnaia was astounded by the emotions he experienced while gazing out from the podium.
Bagnaia expressed his amazement, saying that as an Italian, it's incredible to stand before the podium and see a vast crowd wearing their hats and displaying their numbers.
"It adds a unique and enchanting quality. Mugello holds a special place in my heart for this reason. My affection for it began in my youth and remains strong today."
"In 2022, there was a noticeable increase in the number of people. The year 2023 was positive, but this year feels reminiscent of earlier times."
Reflecting on his approach in the first two corners, which was essential for securing the win, Bagnaia mentioned last season when he was passed at the start.
Bagnaia explained that it's less about the risk involved in overtaking Martin and more about being in the right place at the right time.
"I chose to move to the outside since I recalled that Miller had passed me there last year. By staying on the outside, I could position myself on the inside for the second corner."
"I attempted to replicate the maneuver, but Maverick braked sharply, nearly spoiling my plan. However, noticing that he was veering off course, I decided to cut off his path, which turned out to be the optimal choice."
“Noticing that Jorge struggled with corner one, I seized the opportunity to pass him in corner two.”
