McLaren’s Team Orders Dilemma: Balancing Piastri’s No1 Status with Norris Support, Rosberg Analyzes Future Challenges
Oscar Piastri's contract positions him as the primary driver, lacking any clause that mandates him to support Lando Norris. The discussion around McLaren's team strategy is scrutinized by Nico Rosberg.
Nico Rosberg has cautioned that expecting future team orders from McLaren to be easily followed will be challenging.
The 'papaya rules' – McLaren's decision not to favor Lando Norris or Oscar Piastri as their lead driver – faced backlash during the previous weekend's F1 Italian Grand Prix.
During the initial lap, Norris and Piastri competed for placement, yet in the end, it was Ferrari's Charles Leclerc who triumphed at Monza.
McLaren has suggested they may reconsider their strategy regarding team orders as the competition for both the drivers’ and constructors’ championships intensifies.
Norris trails Max Verstappen by 62 points in the championship rankings, while McLaren is only eight points behind Red Bull in the team standings.
Rosberg shared with the Sky F1 podcast: "In Lando's case, the goal is to secure race victories based on one's own performance, not due to the assistance of a teammate."
"In the case of Turn 4, for instance, if the team instructed to 'ease off and maintain your spot to prevent the Ferraris from overtaking,' you might not perceive it as an act of teamwork from your colleague."
Rosberg mentioned, "Oscar is in a tough spot since he's under a No 1 contract.
"The agreement doesn't stipulate that he must assist Lando."
"His performance behind the wheel is exceptional as well. He's truly earned every chance to secure victories in races."
"In terms of mathematics, he still has a chance to become the world champion. His points aren't significantly lower than Lando's."
"Requesting Oscar to begin giving up victories in races could be quite a tall order."
McLaren's directives conflict with their inherent nature
This season, Norris achieved victories in the Miami and Netherlands Grand Prix, while Piastri secured a win in Hungary.
In the Hungarian Grand Prix, McLaren issued a directive to their leading driver, Norris, instructing him to let his teammate Piastri pass, which Norris ultimately adhered to after initially leading the race.
When questioned about McLaren's need to reassess their strategy halfway through the season, Rosberg explained, "They've been caught off guard by the circumstances. It's in their nature to compete with two top-tier drivers, both given equal chances."
"This took them completely by surprise. It's a significant educational experience for them."
"Considering and determining the most effective strategy is a significant consideration."
"It contradicts their fundamental principle of having two top drivers with equal chances."
Rosberg maintained that it was unforeseeable for McLaren to predict that Norris and Piastri would be competing so tightly with Verstappen in the championship rankings.
He mentioned that the team's rapid improvement prevented them from altering their strategy regarding team orders sooner.
"Perhaps it was premature, as there was little belief in Lando's potential to clinch the title," he commented.
"Absolutely, given the current situation, they stand as the frontrunners for the constructors' championship, and winning the drivers' championship is definitely within reach.
"It's becoming apparent that Andrea Stella and Zak Brown are seriously considering the matter."
