Expert Analysis: Sainz Bears Greater Blame in High-Stakes Baku Clash with Perez
Specialist analysis attributes fault for the collision between Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz
Responsibility has been assigned following the clash between Carlos Sainz and Sergio Perez
Karun Chandhok argues that Carlos Sainz bears the majority of responsibility for the collision with Sergio Perez in Baku that concluded their race.
In the final lap of the F1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Ferrari's Sainz and Red Bull's Perez were involved in a collision that took them out of the race.
Their battle for a top-three finish concluded with both vehicles crashing into the barrier.
Charles Leclerc, securing second place, initially resisted Perez's attempt to overtake him.
Chandhok reviewed the footage for Sky Sports, noting, "Leclerc took a defensive position on the inside track heading into the initial turn, forcing Perez to the outer edge.
Carlos gains speed and builds momentum into Turn 2, where he attempts an overtaking maneuver around the outside of his teammate.
Carlos misses the ideal turning point, while Checo maintains his position on the optimal path where traction is best.
"Carlos experiences an unfavorable exit. Checo manages to gain a more advantageous momentum."
"Carlos is positioned along the white line by the wall, while Checo is located centrally on the track."
"Carlos is gradually moving towards the center, and that's the point at which they collide.
"A racing driver naturally seeks to steer clear of the wall."
Carlos is gradually moving closer, inching in… he has shifted from the white line, veering off the path.
"Through the onboard cameras, we can observe the direction in which the drivers are focusing."
Sainz glances at the mirror, right before the collision occurs, he notices Perez.
Regrettably, it seems Carlos must bear a greater share of the responsibility.
"They were really near each other, and it's not a location where you'd anticipate any problems. You would also assume the other driver would maneuver away."
Officials looked into the matter but decided against pursuing any additional measures.
Perez's failure to finish resulted in a significant loss of points for Red Bull in the team standings, leading them to slip behind McLaren following Oscar Piastri's win in Baku.
This incident also deprived Perez of the uncommon opportunity to outperform his teammate Max Verstappen.
