Marc Marquez’s Rain-Assisted Victory at Misano: A Tale of Unexpected Triumph
Marc Marquez claims his surprising victory at Misano would have been "impossible" without the rain, stating, "Without the rain, competing with the leaders was out of the question."
Marc Marquez attributes his surprising win at the San Marino MotoGP to the early rain showers, stating that his triumph “would have been impossible” without them.
The rider from Gresini believed he had "spoiled" his weekend after falling during Q2, which resulted in him starting from the ninth position on the grid.
Marquez faced difficulties in advancing during the sprint and ultimately secured the fifth position.
A gentle downpour at the beginning of the grand prix on Sunday positioned Marquez as a contender for the win, as he overtook Francesco Bagnaia for the lead in the eighth lap out of 27.
Aware of his superior speed in the race's latter stages, Marquez successfully held off Bagnaia and then surged ahead, crossing the finish line with a 3.1-second lead to secure his second victory within a week in 2024.
Marquez conceded post-race that he wouldn't have managed to compete at the forefront without the uncertain conditions.
"Marquez expressed surprise at the outcome, noting that beginning from ninth position made it inconceivable to compete with the leading racers without the intervention of the rain. He is currently trailing the championship leader by 53 points."
"We were aware that our performance significantly improved in the latter half of the race. For me, the primary focus… sure, being in the lead matters, but equally crucial is creating a distance between us, the world champion, and Pecco, who has shown incredible speed at this venue."
"I managed to navigate the initial segment of the latter half of the race with great speed and skill, maintaining my position effectively. Following that, I took an aggressive stance in the final laps."
During the peak of the rainfall on the seventh lap, Jorge Martin decided to switch to his rain-prepared motorcycle while holding the second position.
Marquez stated that he hadn't planned to enter the pit lane at that moment, even though he witnessed Franco Morbidelli's fall from third place due to the rain. However, he acknowledged that if the weather had deteriorated further on the next lap, he would have considered pitting.
He said no, considering whether to pit at the same time as Martin.
Certainly, if there had been an additional lap with this level of rainfall, then perhaps it would have been the moment to head back in.
"Particularly when I noticed that no one else was entering and it required just a single rider to remain outside, that's exactly what I chose to do."
"I managed the situation well initially, but it was on the following lap that I made my move. I put in all my effort. I noticed a few riders went down due to the extremely wet conditions at Turns 1 and 2, but we handled it effectively."
Marquez commented, "Throughout the weekend, we were fast. However, we slipped up during the qualifying round.
"We must focus on enhancements in that area, within a fortnight."
"Besides, upon noticing the droplets on my helmet and the road, I chose to gamble…"
