Marc Marquez’s Aragon Triumph Highlights Championship Struggles: Too Far to Fight for the Title
Marc Marquez's win in the Aragon MotoGP doesn't change the fact that he's still not in contention for the championship title.
Eight-time World Champion Marc Marquez clinched a win at the Aragon MotoGP, narrowing his gap in the championship standings to 70 points. Despite this achievement, he believes he remains too distant to be seen as a serious title challenger.
Besides trailing Jorge Martin by 70 points, Marquez also finds himself 47 points short of Francesco Bagnaia, who holds the record for the most wins in 2024 with a total of seven Grand Prix victories and three Sprint race triumphs.
During the post-race press conference in Aragon, Marquez acknowledged their position by saying, "No, we are quite distant," when questioned about their chances in the championship. He added, "We keep losing more and more points. We are too far behind."
"It's not just a single competitor; there are two who are more consistent than we are."
"A single weekend won't transform our lives. It will certainly be beneficial, but it won't be a game-changer. We're too far behind to contend for the championship this year."
"However, our realistic target should be aiming for a spot in the top three. There are still many points up for grabs and a lot can happen. The weather in Asia, with its storms and rain, adds an element of unpredictability."
"We continue to have a good time, and that's what matters most to me. We'll aim to persist and compete against the best."
Highlighting the importance of maintaining consistency to compete for the championship, Marquez noted the atypical circumstances of the Aragon round.
"This weekend has been fantastic, the atmosphere has been incredible," he stated. "However, we must stay realistic as the conditions were quite unique. For me, the Red Bull Ring GP was more significant because I felt great and was very close in performance to the leading competitors."
"The significance of this win is immense, and our next step is to achieve consistency. We must learn and adapt during races, though I am aware that there will be weekends where we face more difficulties than usual. Consistency will be crucial moving forward."
Marquez highlighted Enea Bastianini's situation, noting that despite being considered a significant contender for the championship following his double victory at the British Grand Prix, Bastianini managed only a fifth-place finish in Aragon after starting from 14th position in qualifying.
Marquez stated, "We aim to achieve this again in the future. Although we can have a fast weekend—like Enea Bastianini did at Silverstone—what I really want to focus on is consistency, which is the hardest aspect to master."
Jorge Martin, currently ahead in the championship by 23 points following the Aragon race, partially concurred with Marquez.
The championship leader remarked, "Marc is currently not close, but if he begins to win every race weekend, he could become a contender for the title."
"Just two races ago, Enea Bastianini was in contention for the championship, then he fell out of the running. Now, Marc has emerged as a strong competitor after his performances in Austria and here. Without a doubt, he is one of the top riders and a serious contender for the title."
