Marc Marquez’s Aragon Triumph: A Boost, But Championship Hopes Remain Slim
Marc Marquez's championship hopes remain subdued despite his win at the Aragon MotoGP.
Eight-time World Champion Marc Marquez secured a win at the Aragon MotoGP, cutting his points gap in the championship to 70. Despite this achievement, he believes he is still not close enough to be seen as a title contender.
Alongside trailing Jorge Martin by 70 points, Marquez also finds himself 47 points short of Francesco Bagnaia, who continues to be the top performer in 2024 with seven Grand Prix wins and three Sprint race victories.
During the post-race press conference at Aragon, Marquez acknowledged that they are not close to winning the championship. He mentioned that they are continuing to lose more points and that the gap is becoming increasingly large.
"Additionally, it’s not just a single competitor; there are actually two who demonstrate greater consistency compared to us."
"A single weekend won't transform our lives. It will certainly provide some assistance, but it won't be a game-changer. We are not in a position to compete for the championship this year."
"However, our aim should be to compete for a spot in the top three. That’s an achievable target. There are still many points up for grabs and plenty of events that could unfold, especially considering the unpredictable weather in Asia, with storms and rain being common."
"However, our continued enjoyment is crucial to me, and we will strive to persist and compete with the leading figures."
Highlighting the importance of maintaining consistency to compete for the championship, Marquez noted the atypical circumstances of the Aragon race.
"The weekend was incredibly positive, and the atmosphere was fantastic," he remarked. "However, we have to be realistic as the conditions were quite unique. Personally, I found the Red Bull Ring GP to be more significant because I felt excellent and was competing very closely with the leading racers."
"The importance of this win is immense, and now our focus will shift to achieving consistency. We need to analyze our performance in races, though I am aware that there will be weekends where we face greater challenges than others. Consistency will be the next crucial factor."
Marquez highlighted Enea Bastianini's situation, noting that despite being viewed as a significant contender for the championship following his double victory at the British Grand Prix, Bastianini finished fifth in Aragon after starting the race from 14th position.
Marquez stated, "We aim to replicate our performance in the future. For instance, Enea [Bastianini] showed great speed at Silverstone. However, maintaining consistency is a challenging aspect that I want to focus on."
Jorge Martin, currently ahead in the championship standings by 23 points following the Aragon race, partially concurred with Marquez.
"The current championship leader mentioned that even though Marc is currently behind, he could become a contender for the title if he begins to win every race weekend."
"Just two races ago, Enea Bastianini was still in contention for the title, then he wasn't. Now, Marc has shown his strength in Austria and here, proving he's undoubtedly one of the top riders and capable of competing for the championship."
