Marc Marquez’s Aragon Triumph: A Boost, But Championship Hopes Remain Distant
Marc Marquez's championship hopes remain subdued despite his win at the Aragon MotoGP.
Eight-time World Champion Marc Marquez clinched a win at the Aragon MotoGP, cutting his championship points gap to 70. Despite this achievement, Marquez believes he remains too distant to be viewed as a serious title contender at this stage.
Apart from trailing Jorge Martin by 70 points, Marquez is also 47 points short of Francesco Bagnaia, who holds the record for the most wins in 2024 with seven Grand Prix victories and three Sprint race triumphs.
During the post-race press conference in Aragon, Marquez conceded that they are not close to the championship title. When questioned about his chances, he said, "No, we are a long way off. We keep losing more and more points. We are too far behind."
“There are actually two riders who display greater consistency compared to us.
"A single weekend won't transform our lives. It will certainly benefit us, but it won't bring about a significant change. We're too far behind to compete for the championship this year."
"However, our aim should be to compete for a spot in the top three. This is a feasible objective. There are still many points up for grabs and numerous events yet to unfold, particularly since the weather in Asia can be unpredictable with storms and rain. You never know what might happen."
"However, we continue to have fun, which is what matters most to me, and we will strive to compete with the leading players."
Highlighting the importance of maintaining consistency to compete for the championship, Marquez noted the atypical conditions during the Aragon round.
“This weekend was absolutely fantastic, and the atmosphere was incredible,” he remarked. “However, we must stay grounded as the circumstances were quite unique. Personally, I found the Red Bull Ring Grand Prix to be more significant because I felt exceptionally good and was performing at a level very close to the top competitors.”
"The significance of this win is immense, and our next goal is to achieve consistency. We need to analyze our performance during races, but I'm aware that there will be weekends where we face more challenges than usual. Consistency will be crucial for our success."
Marquez also highlighted Enea Bastianini's situation. Despite being viewed as a significant contender for the championship following his double victory at the British Grand Prix, Bastianini finished fifth in Aragon after starting in 14th place in the qualifiers.
Marquez stated, "We aim to replicate our success in the future. Although we can have a strong performance on certain weekends—like Enea Bastianini did at Silverstone—one of my main focuses is achieving consistency, which is the hardest aspect to master."
Jorge Martin, currently holding a 23-point lead in the championship after the Aragon race, partially concurred with Marquez.
The championship leader mentioned that although Marc is currently behind, he could still compete for the title if he begins to win every race weekend.
"Just two races back, Enea Bastianini was still competing for the title. Although he has since fallen out of contention, Marc has emerged as a strong candidate following his performance in Austria and here. Without a doubt, Marc is one of the top riders and a serious contender for the championship."
