Marc Marquez Triumphs at Aragon: Ends Victory Drought with “Perfect” Weekend
Marc Marquez felt compelled to ensure a flawless MotoGP weekend at Aragon
"During the Sprint, I couldn't find joy in it knowing how crucial today was."
Marc Marquez triumphantly concluded his nearly three-year winless streak at the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, a win he characterized as the culmination of a "perfect" weekend.
Marquez led the pack in all three practice rounds, secured the pole position with a lead of 0.8 seconds, triumphed in the Sprint with a commanding lead, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday a full five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
Marquez did not lead during the Warm Up session, which remained damp due to the rain that fell from Saturday night through to Sunday morning, because he did not record a lap time.
"Marquez described the weekend as ideal during the post-race media briefing. "We were at the forefront of every session; the only exception was the Warm Up, where, to be frank, I chose to remain in the pit with my team," he explained.
Marquez shared his feelings about the nearly three-year period he spent without a win and the sense of relief he experienced as he crossed the finish line, securing his 60th victory in the premier class.
He expressed, "From the start of the race, there was an incredible sensation. It was an exceptionally lengthy race, and managing emotions during the final laps was challenging, but as I passed the finish line, it felt as if I had shed 3–4kg."
"With every step, my back grew increasingly heavy, making this triumph truly remarkable. Instantly, my thoughts turned to the journey we've undertaken, the support network surrounding me, including my family, my girlfriend, and my brother [Alex Marquez].
"They provided significant assistance, with the Gresini team offering me a chance in particular. As a newcomer, I aimed to contribute my all, and we succeeded. We've set a new goal and are continuing on our path."
Marquez established a significant lead during the race, allowing him the luxury of contemplation in the closing laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already envisioning myself celebrating on the podium," he shared. "Beyond that, the atmosphere in the Gresini garage is always lively and filled with joy; it's like there's a constant celebration happening there."
"Beyond this, the initial factor was the individuals surrounding me. Being in a challenging or intense circumstance, if you lack a genuinely compassionate and kind team, individuals who are experiencing even more hardship than yourself, that's what truly made an impact."
"The celebration was quite unusual because the excitement level in previous races, even when celebrating second or third places, was higher than today, which felt more like an emotional moment than one driven by adrenaline."
After leading in every session except for the rainy Sunday morning Warm Up, Marquez confessed that he felt a certain amount of pressure to finish his weekend with a win in the Grand Prix.
"Today, I was really hard on myself," he explained. "As you observed in yesterday's Sprint, I couldn't enjoy it since I was aware of the significance of today and the crucial chance it presented.
Therefore, I made an effort to stay concentrated. Possessing speed gives the impression that you can control the circumstances, showing consistency and intelligence; however, you remain unchanged. Without speed, it becomes extremely challenging to handle the situation.
"Thus, we aim to increase our pace in the upcoming races and strive to keep up with the leading competitors."
Marquez regards this win as equally significant to his 2021 victory at the German Grand Prix, which was his comeback success following an arm injury at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
"Marquez ranked it on the same level as 2021 in Germany," he stated.
"When you're facing numerous injuries, a profound period, the significance of the wins changes."
Indeed, I've achieved 60 wins, but those two wins, along with my initial MotoGP triumph, stand out as the most significant. This is because they instill a unique kind of confidence in you, providing an additional boost to your self-assurance.
"For quite a while, I hadn't been feeling my best, and this weekend's laps felt unusually brief. My approach was straightforward: I simply rode, effortlessly gliding through, while paying special attention to avoid any errors."
Despite it being his 12th weekend racing for the Gresini Ducati team, Marquez expressed that he felt confident about winning ever since he first tested the Desmosedici at Valencia towards the close of 2023.
"During the Valencia trial, Marquez acknowledged, "I recognized that a race victory is on the horizon." He added, "It became clear to me that chances would come our way. Competing for the championship is a different matter; we must continue to put in the effort for that."
"In Valencia, I began to grasp that it was only a matter of time before it happened."
