Marc Marquez Overcomes Pressure to Clinch ‘Perfect’ Aragon MotoGP Victory After Almost Three-Year Drought
Marc Marquez admitted to feeling self-imposed pressure to achieve a flawless performance at the Aragon MotoGP. "During the Sprint, I couldn't enjoy myself because I understood the significance of today's race," he said.
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year stretch without a win by triumphing at the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, a race he called "perfect".
Marquez led the timing charts in all three practice sessions, secured pole position with a margin of 0.8 seconds, dominated the Sprint race, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The Warm Up session, affected by rain from Saturday night into Sunday morning, was the only segment where Marquez did not lead, as he did not record a lap time.
“It was an ideal weekend,” Marquez said during the post-race press conference. “We were ahead in all the sessions, except for the Warm Up, where I chose to stay in the garage with the team.”
Marquez discussed the emotional strain of nearly three years without a win and the sense of relief he experienced when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th top-tier victory.
“In the race, we had an incredible sensation right from the start,” he remarked. “It was an exceptionally long race, and managing the emotions in the final laps was challenging, but crossing the finish line felt like I had shed 3–4kg.”
"Due to the increasing weight on my back with each step, winning this was unbelievable. Right away, I began reflecting on everything we went through, thinking about everyone who supported me, including my family, my girlfriend, and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided me with significant assistance, with the Gresini team specifically offering me the chance. As a newcomer, I aimed to give my all, and we achieved our goal. Now, we set new objectives and continue to move forward."
Marquez established a significant lead during the race, allowing him to reflect on various thoughts in the closing laps.
"In the last three laps, I was already thinking about the podium," he mentioned. "But more than that, the Gresini garage, where the team is based, is always a lively and cheerful place, almost like a constant party."
"Besides that, the primary factor was the individuals surrounding me. In extremely challenging circumstances, when you find yourself in a profound predicament, having a genuinely compassionate team, truly kind-hearted people, who are enduring even more than I am — that was the crucial element."
He described the celebration as quite unusual, noting that in other races, the adrenaline levels were much higher when celebrating second or third places. Today, however, it was more about emotion than adrenaline.
After leading in all sessions except for the rainy Sunday morning Warm Up, Marquez confessed to feeling some pressure to secure a win in the Grand Prix to cap off his weekend.
"I felt a sense of urgency today," he explained. "If you noticed during the Sprint yesterday, I wasn't having fun because I was aware that today was crucial and that I had a significant chance to make an impact."
"That's why I made an effort to stay focused. With speed on your side, it seems easier to handle everything, maintain consistency, and make smart decisions. However, without speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and try to get closer to the leading competitors."
Having secured victory, Marquez regards it in the same light as his 2021 German Grand Prix win, which marked his first triumph following the arm injury he sustained at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez compared it to his experience in Germany in 2021, saying it was on the same level.
"When you face numerous injuries and challenging times, the significance of your triumphs changes."
"Indeed, I have secured 60 wins, but those two particular victories, along with my initial win in MotoGP, stand out as the most significant. They boost your confidence in a unique manner and provide an added sense of assurance."
"I hadn't felt well for quite some time, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding effortlessly, maintaining a smooth flow, but I was also highly focused on avoiding any errors."
Despite this being Marquez's 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati squad, he mentioned that he had believed winning was achievable ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the conclusion of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez commented, "I understood that a race victory is within reach." He noted that the test made him realize that there will be chances to win. However, he emphasized that contending for the championship is a different story, requiring continued effort.
"However, it was in Valencia where I began to realize that it would eventually come."
