Marc Marquez Hails Bastianini’s ‘Rocket’ Speed as Ducati Secures One-Two at Mugello
Marc Marquez described Bastianini as a "rocket" in the final two laps, noting his incredible speed. Marquez remarked, "Bastianini was extremely fast in those last two laps!"
Ducati did not secure their 93rd victory with rider number 93, as Marc Marquez failed to make it onto the MotoGP podium at Mugello on Sunday, marking the first time in four races.
The Gresini rider maintained fourth position for the majority of the race, eventually securing a spot on the podium after overtaking Enea Bastianini on the 18th lap out of 23.
The eight-time world champion then focused on catching the title leader Jorge Martin, but Bastianini overtook them both with a late surge, securing a one-two finish for Ducati Lenovo behind Francesco Bagnaia.
"Today, our pace and speed were on point," Marquez mentioned to MotoGP.com. "I was consistently in the mix, battling and staying close to the leading riders – Pecco, Martin, and Bastianini. However, for the majority of the race, I found myself trailing behind Bastianini."
"I attempted various strategies to overtake him. I tried to create some distance, then return and manage the pressure from the front. However, it just wasn't feasible. When there were 5 laps left, I saw a slight opportunity at the first turn."
“At that moment, I thought, ‘Alright, it’s time to overtake Martin.’ And we were closing in on him. However, in the final two laps, Bastianini was incredibly quick, like a rocket! He was extremely fast!”
Marquez, who finished second to Francesco Bagnaia in the Sprint race, was seen emitting small clouds of tire smoke from the last corner, seemingly due to his ride-height device making contact.
Marquez explained that it didn't impact him personally. He added that it might have had a slight effect on the tyre. He acknowledged that they are aware of the situation with those bumps and mentioned that they also slightly lower the rear shock at that particular spot.
"Indeed, the 2023 model has a reduced gap between the tire and the seat. Additionally, we constantly aim to push the limits by lowering the ride height device as much as possible to achieve better speed."
"However, the situation is manageable, it's merely smoke. Ducati is addressing the issue."
Marquez is currently in third place in the world championship standings, trailing the leader Martin by 35 points and Bagnaia by 18 points.
On Sunday, Fabio di Giannantonio was the second-fastest GP23 rider, finishing in seventh place, eight seconds behind Marquez.
On Monday, Marquez will participate in an official testing session at Mugello alongside his competitors.
