Marc Marquez Ends Three-Year Victory Drought with ‘Perfect’ Aragon MotoGP Weekend
Marc Marquez admitted he "put pressure on himself" to have a "flawless" weekend at the Aragon MotoGP. He confessed, "During the Sprint, I wasn't having fun because I understood the significance of today."
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year spell without a win by securing victory at the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, a triumph he referred to as "perfect."
Marquez led the timesheets in all three practice sessions, secured pole position with a 0.8-second advantage, triumphed decisively in the Sprint, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday with a five-second lead over Jorge Martin.
The only session where Marquez didn't lead was the Warm Up, which was damp due to rain from Saturday night continuing into Sunday morning, as he didn't record a lap time.
“It was an ideal weekend,” Marquez mentioned during the post-race press conference. “We were ahead in all the sessions, except for the Warm Up. To be honest, I chose to remain in the garage with the team during that time.”
Marquez expressed the intense emotions he experienced during the nearly three-year period without a win, and the sense of relief he felt when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th victory in the top class.
“In the competition, we felt incredible right from the start,” he mentioned. “The race was extremely long, and it was challenging to keep our emotions in check during the final laps, but crossing the finish line felt like shedding 3–4kg of weight.”
"With each step, the weight on my back felt increasingly heavy, making this victory feel extraordinary. Instantly, my thoughts shifted to the entire journey we undertook, the people who stood by me, and my family, including my girlfriend and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided significant support, with the Gresini team giving me a crucial opportunity. As a newcomer, I aimed to give my all, and we succeeded. We have set new goals and will continue to move forward."
Marquez created a significant lead during the race, allowing him to contemplate during the last few laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about the podium," he mentioned. "But beyond the podium, the atmosphere in the Gresini garage is always amusing and joyful; it's like a constant celebration there."
"Beyond everything else, the key element was the support from those around me. In times of severe hardship, being surrounded by a compassionate team who were more affected by my struggles than I was truly made a significant difference."
"The celebration felt quite unusual because, unlike in other races where the adrenaline rush was more intense even when finishing in second or third place, today’s feeling was more about emotion than adrenaline."
After leading in all sessions except the rainy Sunday morning Warm Up, Marquez acknowledged feeling some pressure to secure a win in the Grand Prix to cap off his weekend.
"Today, I felt a lot of stress," he stated. "Yesterday, during the Sprint, I wasn't having fun because I was aware that today was crucial and that I had a significant chance ahead of me."
"Therefore, I aimed to stay concentrated. When you have the necessary speed, it appears that you can handle the situation well, showing consistency and intelligence; however, without that speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and try to stay competitive with the leaders."
After securing the win, Marquez equates it with his 2021 German Grand Prix victory, marking his first win since suffering a broken arm at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez stated, “I consider it to be at the same level as the 2021 event in Germany.”
"When you face numerous injuries and are going through a particularly challenging period, the significance of your wins changes."
"Indeed, I have achieved 60 wins, but the two mentioned here, along with my initial victory in MotoGP, hold the greatest significance. These particular successes boost your confidence in a unique manner, providing an additional sense of assurance."
"I hadn't felt well for quite a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding with ease, maintaining a smooth flow, but I stayed especially focused to avoid any errors."
Despite it being Marquez's twelfth race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, he revealed that he had believed in the possibility of winning ever since he first tested the Desmosedici in Valencia at the conclusion of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez acknowledged that a race victory was within reach. He understood that they would have their chances. However, contending for the championship would require continued effort and hard work.
"In Valencia, I began to realize that it would eventually come."
