Marc Marquez Ends Three-Year Victory Drought with Dominant Display at Aragon MotoGP
Marc Marquez admitted to feeling self-imposed pressure to achieve an impeccable performance during the Aragon MotoGP weekend. He confessed that during the Sprint race, he couldn't find enjoyment because he was aware of the significance of the day's events.
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year streak without a win by securing a victory at the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, a triumph he called "perfect."
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured pole position with a 0.8-second lead, dominated the Sprint race, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The only session where Marquez did not lead was the Warm Up, which was affected by rain from Saturday night into Sunday morning, as he didn’t record a lap time.
During the post-race press conference, Marquez described the weekend as flawless. He mentioned that they were ahead in all the sessions, except for the Warm Up, where he chose to remain in the pit area after discussing it with his team.
Marquez discussed the emotional journey he experienced during nearly three years without a win and the immense relief he felt when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th victory in the premier class.
"In the race, we felt incredible right from the start," he stated. "The race was extremely long, and it was hard to keep emotions in check during the final laps, but crossing the finish line made me feel as if I had shed 3–4kg."
"Due to the increasing strain on my back with each passing step, securing this victory was truly remarkable. Right away, my thoughts shifted to the entire journey we had undertaken, the support from everyone around me, my family, my girlfriend, and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided me with significant support, and the Gresini team, in particular, offered me a chance. As a newcomer, I aimed to put in my best effort, and we succeeded. We've set new goals and continue to move forward."
Marquez gained a significant lead during the race, allowing him to contemplate various thoughts in the closing laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about being on the podium," he remarked. "But more than just the podium, it's the Gresini garage that stands out; it's always lively and cheerful, like a constant celebration."
"Besides that, the initial crucial factor was the people surrounding me. In extremely challenging circumstances, being in the depths of hardship, having a genuinely compassionate and supportive team—people who are even more affected by the situation than I am—truly made all the difference."
The celebration felt quite unusual, as the adrenaline levels were actually higher in other races where we celebrated second or third place finishes. Today's event was more about feeling emotion rather than adrenaline.
After leading all sessions except for the rainy Sunday morning Warm Up, Marquez confessed to feeling some pressure to secure a win in the Grand Prix to cap off his weekend.
"I felt a lot of pressure today," he remarked. "Yesterday during the Sprint, I couldn't enjoy myself because I was aware that today was crucial and that I had a significant opportunity ahead."
"In order to stay focused, I made a conscious effort. When you have the necessary speed, it appears that you can control the situation effectively, showing consistency and intelligence. However, if you lack the speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and try to stay competitive with the leading racers."
Marquez regards this victory as being on par with his 2021 German Grand Prix win, which marked his first triumph since he broke his arm at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez stated, "I consider it to be on par with the 2021 event in Germany."
"When there are numerous injuries and the situation is particularly challenging, the significance of the wins changes."
"Although I’ve won 60 times, those two specific wins, along with my first victory in MotoGP, are the most significant. They boost your confidence in a unique way and provide an additional level of assurance."
"I hadn't felt well for a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding, it felt effortless, and I was in the zone, but I made sure to stay highly focused to avoid any errors."
Despite being in his 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati squad, Marquez revealed that he had believed in the possibility of winning ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez acknowledged that a race victory is on the horizon. He understood that they will have their chances. However, competing for the championship is a different matter, and they need to continue putting in the effort for that goal.
"However, while in Valencia, I began to realize that it would inevitably come."
