Marc Marquez Breaks Three-Year Victory Drought with ‘Perfect’ Performance at Aragon MotoGP
Marc Marquez admitted that he "put pressure on himself" to achieve a "flawless" performance at the Aragon MotoGP weekend. He stated, "I wasn't having fun during the Sprint because I was aware of how crucial today was."
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year streak without a win by clinching victory at the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, a race he called "perfect."
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured pole position with a 0.8-second lead, triumphed in the Sprint with a commanding performance, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The only session not led by Marquez was the Warm Up, which remained damp from rain that fell overnight on Saturday and into Sunday morning, as he did not record a lap time.
"It was an ideal weekend," Marquez mentioned during the post-race press briefing. "We were ahead in all the sessions, except for the Warm Up, where I chose, together with my team, to remain in the garage."
Marquez discussed the emotional tension he experienced during the nearly three-year period without a win and the sense of relief he felt when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th victory in the premier class.
He expressed that they had an incredible sensation from the start of the race. Describing it as exceptionally long, he mentioned that managing emotions during the final laps was challenging. However, upon crossing the finish line, he felt as if he had shed 3-4 kilograms.
"Due to the increasing weight on my back with each step, winning felt unbelievable. Instantly, my thoughts turned to the entire journey we had taken, the people who supported me, my family, my girlfriend, and my brother Alex Marquez."
"They provided significant assistance, particularly the Gresini team, which gave me a chance. As a newcomer, I aimed to give my all, and we succeeded. We've set a new goal and will continue to push forward."
Marquez gained a significant lead during the race, allowing him to contemplate matters in the closing laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about standing on the podium," he shared. "But more than that, the atmosphere in the Gresini garage is always lively and joyful; it's like a constant celebration there."
"Moreover, the primary factor was the support network around me. In moments of extreme hardship, when you're deeply entrenched in challenges, having a compassionate and empathetic team—those who are even more affected by the situation than yourself—truly makes a significant impact."
"The celebration felt unusual since other races had higher adrenaline levels, even when finishing in second or third place. Today, it was more about emotion than adrenaline."
After leading in all sessions except for the rainy Sunday morning Warm Up, Marquez confessed that he was under some pressure to finish his weekend with a win in the Grand Prix.
“I felt the need to push myself today,” he mentioned. “Yesterday during the Sprint, I wasn’t having fun because I was aware that today was crucial and that I had a significant chance ahead of me.”
"That's why I aimed to stay focused. When you have speed, it seems like you can handle the situation well, stay consistent, and be smart. However, without speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let’s aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and try to stay competitive with the leaders."
Marquez views this victory as equally significant to his win at the 2021 German Grand Prix, which marked his first success following the arm injury he sustained at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez stated, "I consider it to be on the same level as my 2021 performance in Germany."
"When you face numerous injuries and challenging times, wins hold a unique significance."
While I have won 60 races, those two wins, along with my first victory in MotoGP, hold the most significance for me. They provide a unique boost in confidence and give me that extra assurance.
"I hadn't felt well for a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was merely riding; it felt effortless and smooth, but I was particularly focused on avoiding any errors."
Despite it being Marquez’s twelfth race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, he mentioned that he had believed winning was achievable ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez acknowledged that a race victory was imminent. He understood that opportunities to win would come their way. However, he noted that competing for the championship requires continued effort and dedication.
"However, while in Valencia, I began to realize that it would eventually come."
