Marc Marquez Breaks Three-Year Drought with ‘Perfect’ Victory at Aragon MotoGP
Marc Marquez admitted he "added pressure on myself" to achieve a "flawless" performance at the Aragon MotoGP. He confessed, "During the Sprint, I wasn't having fun because I was aware of the significance of today."
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year streak without a win at the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, a triumph he referred to as "perfect."
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured pole position with a 0.8-second advantage, dominated the Sprint race, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The only session where Marquez did not lead was the Warm Up, which was affected by rain from Saturday night into Sunday morning, and he did not record a lap time in that session.
Marquez described the weekend as flawless during the post-race press conference. He mentioned that they dominated every session, except for the Warm Up, where he and his team chose to remain in the garage.
Marquez discussed the emotional journey he experienced during the nearly three-year period without a win, and the sense of relief he felt upon crossing the finish line to secure his 60th top-tier victory.
"We felt fantastic from the start of the race," he commented. "It was an extremely lengthy race, and it was hard to keep my emotions in check during the final laps. However, crossing the finish line made me feel like I shed 3–4kg."
"With each step, the weight on my back grew heavier, making this victory feel even more incredible. Right away, my mind filled with thoughts of everything we went through, the people who supported me, my family, my girlfriend, and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"The support I received was immense, with the Gresini team playing a crucial role by giving me the chance. As a newcomer, I aimed to give my all, and we achieved our goal. Now, we set new objectives and continue pressing forward."
Marquez gained a significant lead during the race, allowing him to reflect during the last few laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about finishing on the podium," he mentioned. "More than just the podium, the atmosphere in the Gresini garage is always lively and joyful; it's always a celebration there."
"Additionally, the most important factor was the individuals surrounding me. In extremely challenging circumstances, if you lack a genuinely compassionate team—people who care deeply and are more affected by the situation than I am—it makes all the difference."
"The celebration felt unusual because, in other races, the adrenaline rush was much higher when celebrating second or third places. Today, it was more about feeling emotion than experiencing adrenaline."
After leading all sessions except for the rain-soaked Sunday morning Warm Up, Marquez confessed to feeling some pressure to finish his weekend with a win in the Grand Prix.
"I felt a lot of self-imposed pressure today," he stated. "As you noticed during yesterday's Sprint, I wasn't having a good time because I was aware that today was crucial and that I had a significant chance ahead of me."
"That's why I aimed to stay focused. When you have the speed, it seems like handling the situation becomes easier—you appear consistent and intelligent. However, you're the same person, and without the speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging.
"Let's aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and try to compete closely with the top contenders."
After securing the victory, Marquez equates it with his win at the 2021 German Grand Prix, which marked his first triumph following his arm injury at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez commented, "I consider it to be on the same level as the 2021 race in Germany."
"When you're dealing with numerous injuries and a challenging period, the significance of your wins changes."
"Although I have won 60 times, those two wins, along with my first victory in MotoGP, are the most significant. They provide a unique boost in confidence that is particularly valuable."
"I hadn't felt well for quite some time, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding effortlessly, maintaining a smooth flow, but I stayed highly focused to avoid any errors."
Despite this being Marquez's 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, he mentioned that he had believed in the possibility of winning ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez acknowledged that a race victory is on the horizon. He understood that there will be chances for success. However, he noted that competing for the championship requires continued effort and dedication.
"However, while in Valencia, I began to realize that it would eventually come."
