Marc Marquez Breaks Nearly Three-Year Win Drought with ‘Perfect’ Performance at Aragon MotoGP
Marc Marquez admitted he "put pressure on himself" to achieve a flawless performance during the Aragon MotoGP weekend.
"I couldn't enjoy the Sprint because I was aware of how crucial today was," he said.
Marc Marquez brought an end to his nearly three-year winless streak with a triumph at the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, calling the event "perfect."
Marquez led the timesheets in all three practice sessions, secured pole position with a margin of 0.8 seconds, claimed a commanding victory in the Sprint, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
Marquez did not clock a lap time during the Warm Up session, which was the only part not led by him, as it was wet following rain from Saturday night into Sunday morning.
"It was an ideal weekend," Marquez said during the press conference after the race. "We dominated all the sessions, except for the Warm Up, where I chose to remain in the garage with the team's agreement."
Marquez discussed the emotional journey of nearly three years without a win and the sense of relief he experienced as he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th victory in the premier class.
"The experience during the race was incredible right from the start," he remarked. "The race was extremely long, and managing my emotions in the final laps was tough, but crossing the finish line felt like shedding 3-4kg."
"Step by step, the weight on my back grew heavier, making this victory even more unbelievable. Instantly, my thoughts shifted to the journey we took, the people who supported me, my family, my girlfriend, and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided me with substantial support, and the Gresini team, in particular, offered me a chance. As a newcomer, I aimed to give my all, and we succeeded. We're now setting new goals and moving forward."
Throughout the race, Marquez managed to create a significant lead, allowing him to reflect on various matters during the last few laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about the podium," he mentioned. "Beyond just the podium, the Gresini garage is always a lively and joyful place, constantly feels like a celebration."
"Additionally, the main factor was the individuals surrounding me. In extremely challenging circumstances, when you're in a profound predicament, having a compassionate and supportive team, who are experiencing the struggle even more intensely than I am, truly made a significant impact."
"The celebration felt quite unusual since there was more adrenaline in other races — whether finishing second or third — compared to today, which was more about emotion than adrenaline."
After leading in every session except for the rainy Warm Up on Sunday morning, Marquez confessed that he felt a certain amount of pressure to finish his weekend with a win in the Grand Prix.
"I felt a lot of pressure today," he remarked. "You could tell from yesterday's Sprint that I wasn't having a good time because I was aware of how crucial today is and recognized the significant chance I had."
"That’s why I aimed to stay concentrated. When you have the pace, it seems like you can handle things better, stay steady, and make smart decisions. However, if you lack speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and try to stay competitive with the leading contenders."
Having secured a victory, Marquez regards it as significant as his 2021 German Grand Prix win, which marked his first triumph following his arm injury at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez compared it to his experience in Germany in 2021, considering both to be on the same level.
"When you're dealing with numerous injuries and a particularly challenging period, the significance of your wins changes."
"Although I've won 60 times, those two particular victories, along with my first win in MotoGP, stand out as the most significant. They boost your confidence in a unique way and provide that extra sense of assurance."
"I hadn't been feeling well for quite a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding along; it felt effortless and smooth, but I made sure to focus intensely to avoid any errors."
Despite this being Marquez's twelfth race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, he revealed that he had believed winning was within reach ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez recognized that a race victory is within reach. He noted, "I understood that we will have our chances there. Competing for the championship is another matter; we need to continue our efforts to reach that goal."
"However, while in Valencia, I began to realize that it will eventually come."
