Marc Marquez and Pedro Acosta Ignite MotoGP’s New Golden Age, Says Jorge Lorenzo
MotoGP expected to enter a new era of popularity driven by two standout riders
Reports suggest a rise in MotoGP viewership attributed to the performance of two top competitors
Jorge Lorenzo believes that MotoGP has the potential to see a surge in popularity, possibly nearing the levels seen during Valentino Rossi's prime.
The reason is the competitive nature of Marc Marquez and Pedro Acosta.
This season has seen impressive performances from Marquez and Acosta, who are set to join the factory team in 2025. They might compete for the MotoGP championship, potentially ushering in an exciting new chapter for the sport.
According to AS, Lorenzo stated that the MotoGP viewership has grown since Marc resumed competing for wins, especially with Acosta also in the mix.
"I'm not saying he matches Valentino Rossi in his prime, but he is undeniably the most newsworthy by a long shot."
Lorenzo maintains that Marquez demonstrated his influence by securing the 2025 factory Ducati seat.
He caused the manufacturer to change its decision by stating that he would reject a factory bike if he were part of the Pramac team.
“He has used his tactics optimally,” Lorenzo commented.
"He has strategically stated both publicly and presumably in private that he was not joining Pramac and that his goal was to be with the red team."
Ducati felt intimidated. Their sole strategy to retain Marc Marquez was to offer him a position with the team, and his ultimatum—essentially saying 'either give me a spot or I walk'—made an impact in the decision-making rooms.
“It’s evident that Gigi Dall’Igna and Ducati intended to retain all three riders, with Jorge staying in red, and ideally, Marc moving to Pramac.
“However, Marc had no such strategy in mind.”
Former Ducati racer Lorenzo evaluated the company's choice to sign Marquez, which resulted in the departure of Jorge Martin and Enea Bastianini.
"The outcomes, despite being dismissed by the riders, have been crucial, according to Lorenzo."
"If Jorge Martin had been victorious in nearly every race, I believe he would now be leading, even though he has to compete for that position with Marquez."
"Even though he continues to lead in the World Championship, it's Marc Marquez on the GP23 who is the nearest contender for 2024."
As a result, Claudio Domenicali, feeling the pressure exerted by Marc, chose to secure Marquez over Martín.
"That's all there is to it."
Ducati acknowledges that, at 32 years of age, he likely has between two to four prime years remaining in his career, and he could potentially retire while still representing the brand.
"Not taking into account the outcomes he might produce."
