Jorge Martin Weighs In on Bagnaia-Marquez Collision at Aragon as Championship Battle Intensifies
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the collision between his championship contender Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP.
Jorge Martin's chances of winning the championship improved significantly at the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, thanks to his ongoing impressive performance, while Francesco Bagnaia's hopes took a hit after he crashed.
Martin came to Aragon with a five-point deficit to Bagnaia in the World Championship standings, following the Italian's wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix races in Austria.
However, Bagnaia had a disappointing weekend in terms of points, while Martin continued his streak of finishing second by securing two more second-place finishes. Martin has now placed second in all six races since the summer break.
Bagnaia's weekend culminated in a late-race clash with Alex Marquez. Following a subpar start, Bagnaia was making his way through the pack and reached Marquez's rear wheel with seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez veered off course at turn 12. Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on this, but both riders collided and crashed at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though he was evidently hesitant to strongly support any particular side.
"It's challenging," Martin commented. "You should direct that question to Pecco [Bagnaia] and Alex [Marquez]."
“Absolutely, it's hard to see since there was a significant amount of dust in that area. I believe that Alex couldn't lean further, similar to the incident with Joe Roberts in Moto2 when he crashed on the final lap while competing with his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez. In the end, there was a collision.
"I really hope they’re alright. After the crash, they looked pretty close to the bikes, so fingers crossed they’re good to go for the next race."
Following the incident, Bagnaia visited the medical center where scans revealed no bone fractures. However, the Italian rider mentioned that he was experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
The upcoming MotoGP World Championship event, the San Marino Grand Prix, is scheduled for this weekend at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. In 2023, Bagnaia participated in this race with a leg injury sustained from a crash in the Catalan Grand Prix, and similarly, this year he will have just one week to recover after the Aragon race to prepare for Misano.
Despite Bagnaia having secured victory twice at Misano in the MotoGP class, it was Martin who triumphed in both 2023 races. This year, the Spaniard heads into his rival’s home round with a 23-point lead in the championship.
