Jorge Martin Weighs In on Bagnaia-Marquez Aragon Crash Amidst Championship Shake-Up
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the collision between his championship contender, Pecco Bagnaia, and Alex Marquez during the MotoGP race in Aragon.
Jorge Martin's chances of winning the championship improved last weekend during the Aragon Grand Prix, thanks to his remarkable consistency, while Francesco Bagnaia's hopes took a hit after he crashed.
Coming into Aragon, Martin was five points behind Bagnaia in the World Championship standings. This deficit came after the Italian rider clinched wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix races in Austria.
Despite Bagnaia having a less-than-stellar weekend in terms of points, Martin also experienced a similar outcome, securing second place in both races for the weekend. This marks the sixth consecutive race since the summer break where Martin has consistently finished in second place.
Bagnaia's eventful weekend culminated in a late-race clash with Alex Marquez. Despite a disappointing start, Bagnaia made his way through the pack and caught up to Marquez with seven laps remaining.
During lap 18, Marquez veered off course at turn 12. As Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on the error, the two collided and crashed at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though he was noticeably hesitant to fully support either side.
"It's challenging," stated Martin. "You ought to inquire with Pecco [Bagnaia] and Alex [Marquez]."
"Certainly, it was hard to see because there was a significant amount of dust in that area. I believe this prevented Alex from leaning further, similar to what occurred with Joe Roberts in Moto2 when Roberts crashed on the final lap while competing with his American Racing teammate, Marcos Ramirez. Ultimately, there was a collision."
"I really hope they're alright. After the crash, it looked like they were near the bikes, so I’m wishing they’re in good shape for the next race."
Following the event, Bagnaia visited the medical center, where scans revealed no broken bones. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
The upcoming MotoGP World Championship event, the San Marino Grand Prix, is set to take place this weekend at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. In 2023, Bagnaia participated in this race with a leg injury following a crash at the Catalan Grand Prix. This year, he will again have a one-week recovery period after the Aragon race to prepare for Misano.
Even though Bagnaia has secured two victories at Misano in the MotoGP category, it was Martin who clinched both wins in 2023. This year, the Spanish rider heads into his competitor’s home race with a 23-point lead in the championship standings.
