Jorge Martin Eyes Comeback at Misano Sprint, Vows Full Recovery from Illness Ahead of Title Chase
Jorge Martin stated, "I was operating at only 20% yesterday, so I'm expecting improvements for tomorrow!"
The frontrunner for the MotoGP championship, Jorge Martin, anticipates being in peak condition by the time Saturday's Misano Sprint arrives.
During the Friday practice session for the 2024 San Marino MotoGP, championship frontrunner Jorge Martin was surpassed by Francesco Bagnaia and Marc Marquez.
However, the Pramac Ducati competitor was just 0.281 seconds behind the leader and believes he can "bring it all together" by Saturday, by which time he also anticipates being at peak physical condition.
The previous champion at Misano faced health challenges at the start of the week and, despite showing signs of recovery, believed that his performance during the afternoon's hour-long session was impacted. "The day went well," Martin conveyed to MotoGP.com. "During the morning, my condition was exceptionally better than usual. All elements were functioning flawlessly, and I felt incredibly at ease on the bike.
"During the later part of the day, as the back end began to give me trouble, halting the motorcycle became increasingly difficult. Adjustments to the configuration were numerous, yet we steadily made progress toward the lead. Ultimately, the outcome was positive."
"My performance in the time trial was solid. Although I'm still a bit off by two tenths, I believe I can bring all the elements together tomorrow. Overall, I'm satisfied with our progress and pleased with the effort we've put in."
Joan Mir from Repsol Honda couldn't participate in Friday's ride because of severe gastroenteritis. Following this, Alex Marquez also called off his media briefing scheduled for Friday evening, citing health issues.
Martin has verified that he is also recuperating from an illness.
"Today showed significant improvement. Definitely, I faced some challenges with my physical endurance in the afternoon, but I'm optimistic that by tomorrow, I'll be fully recovered," Martin expressed. "Compared to yesterday when I was only functioning at 20% of my capacity, I'm certain tomorrow will bring better results!"
Franco Morbidelli, from the Pramac team, closely rivaled Martin by securing the fourth position.
Martin is set to begin Saturday's Sprint race holding a 23-point advantage in the championship standings over Bagnaia.
