Jorge Martin Confident Ahead of Misano Sprint Despite Illness: ‘Tomorrow Will Be Better!
Jorge Martin: “I was only at 20% yesterday, so things will improve tomorrow!”
MotoGP championship front-runner Jorge Martin anticipates regaining complete physical health by the time of Saturday's Misano Sprint.
MotoGP championship frontrunner Jorge Martin was overtaken by Francesco Bagnaia and Marc Marquez during the conclusion of Friday's practice session for the 2024 San Marino MotoGP.
The Pramac Ducati racer was just 0.281 seconds off the lead and believes he can "piece everything together" on Saturday. He also anticipates being fully fit physically by then.
The current titleholder of the Misano race had been unwell earlier this week. Although his health has gotten better, he believed it impacted his steadiness during the hour-long afternoon practice. "Overall, it was a positive day," Martin mentioned to MotoGP.com. "In the morning, I felt exceptionally well, even better than on typical days. Everything was functioning flawlessly, and I felt very at ease on the bike."
“In the afternoon, I began to have difficulty stopping the bike due to the softer rear tire. I had to make significant adjustments to the setup, but we were gradually getting closer to the top performers. In the end, it turned out well.
"My timed run went well. I'm still short by two-tenths of a second, but I believe I can perfect it by tomorrow. Overall, I think we have everything in place, and I'm pleased with our progress."
Joan Mir from Repsol Honda couldn't participate on Friday because he was suffering from severe gastroenteritis. Additionally, Alex Marquez called off his scheduled media debrief on Friday evening because he was feeling unwell.
Martin has stated that he is also on the mend from an illness
"Today went significantly better. In the afternoon, I did feel challenged to maintain my physical pace, but I'm confident that I'll be at full strength tomorrow," Martin stated. "Yesterday, I was only at 20% of my capacity, so tomorrow is bound to be an improvement!"
Franco Morbidelli, who is a teammate at Pramac, closely trailed Martin and secured fourth place.
Martin is set to begin the Sprint race on Saturday holding a 23-point advantage over Bagnaia in the championship standings.
