Enea Bastianini Reflects on Thrilling Italian MotoGP Overtakes: ‘This is My Podium
Enea Bastianini commented, "When Marc passed me, I thought, 'this isn't right.'"
Enea Bastianini shares his thoughts on his preferred overtaking maneuver during the Italian MotoGP race.
Despite not having enough time to overtake his teammate Francesco Bagnaia for the victory, Enea Bastianini made his presence felt at Ducati's home MotoGP race.
A mishap involving Jorge Martin during the sprint resulted in Bastianini's crash, but the Italian rider triumphed over Martin in the grand prix.
Before overtaking Martin, Bastianini defended his position against Marc Marquez for a significant portion of the race, eventually reclaiming third place with three laps remaining.
Bastianini began his pursuit of Martin, who had an advantage of 0.8 seconds over Bastianini as they entered the last lap. However, this lead proved insufficient as the factory Ducati racer delivered an impressive 1 minute 46.2 second lap, closing the gap on the series leader and ultimately overtaking him at the final turn.
When asked about his favorite overtaking move, Bastianini mentioned, "Definitely Martin, since it secured me second place. It was satisfying because I hadn't been planning it."
"In the final lap, I considered attempting to overtake him, but he was 0.8 seconds ahead. I recorded a very quick lap time of 1 minute 46.2 seconds."
"He could be overtaken at the final turn. That was satisfying. However, the maneuver to pass Marc was also quite beneficial for me."
Bastianini demonstrated superior speed in the latter stages of the race compared to his competitors, a performance he couldn't display during the sprint.
“When asked about competing against riders like Marquez, Bastianini said, ‘I cleared my mind and from Saturday onwards, I was quick. I felt very driven to achieve more for both myself and everyone present here.’”
"I was dozing off halfway through the race, but when Marc passed me, I snapped out of it and thought, 'No way! This podium spot is mine.'"
"I returned and rode better than ever. It felt great."
