Mugello MotoGP Rider Scores: A flawless performance for one racer on home turf

Crash.net evaluates the rider scores for the Italian MotoGP at Mugello.

Francesco Bagnaia – 10

Following a series of three sprint race non-finishes, Francesco Bagnaia returned triumphantly, showcasing his prowess as the reigning world champion. Bagnaia effectively countered challenges from competitors like Marquez, Bastianini, and Martin, maintaining his lead. The factory Ducati team celebrated an ideal home Grand Prix, highlighted by Bagnaia's impressive performance. Starting from fifth place, he maneuvered to the front within just two corners and held his position effortlessly thereafter.

Enea Bastianini – 9

Enea Bastianini resolved his persistent qualifying issues and was poised for a strong finish in the sprint race until an incident with Jorge Martin caused him to crash. Although Marc Marquez passed him with only a few laps remaining, Bastianini used his impressive late-race speed to reclaim the spot on the second-to-last lap. On the final lap, he delivered an outstanding performance, overtaking Martin.

Jorge Martin – 8

Jorge Martin had a stellar beginning to Saturday by clinching the pole position as the championship leader. However, he quickly lost ground to his primary competitors after crashing in the sprint race, following an overtake by Marc Marquez. Aiming for a secure second place, Martin's advantage in the rankings was further diminished when Bastianini overtook him to claim P2.

Marc Marquez – 9

Marc Marquez resolved his qualifying difficulties and demonstrated speed comparable to sprint victor Francesco Bagnaia, ultimately securing a second-place finish. However, an early duel with Martin caused him to lose significant time. In Sunday's race, Marquez maintained a competitive pace for most of the event, but in the final stages, the three leading riders capitalized on the GP24 machine's advantages. Marquez particularly struggled with corner exits.

Pedro Acosta – 8.5

Following his recent contract with KTM that will see him join the factory team in 2025, Pedro Acosta demonstrated his exceptional skills by clinching his third sprint podium of 2024. Once more, Acosta was the highest-placed non-Ducati rider in the grand prix. Though he was initially in the running for a podium finish, he eventually fell behind the leading four riders, as Ducati maintained their dominance.

Franco Morbidelli – 8

Franco Morbidelli demonstrated his growing potential in recent races by delivering a strong performance in the sprint race, finishing in fourth place. The 2020 MotoGP runner-up followed up his impressive fifth-place finish with a top-six result in the grand prix, successfully fending off a mid-race challenge from Maverick Vinales.

Fabio Di Giannantonio – 7

Fabio Di Giannantonio finished just three-tenths of a second behind Binder in the sprint race, managing to secure seventh place by keeping GP23 teammate Alex Marquez at bay. Di Giannantonio showcased impressive speed in the latter part of the 23-lap race, overtaking Alex Marquez and Vinales in the final laps.

Maverick Vinales – 7

Following a disastrous performance in round six in Catalunya, Aprilia rider Maverick Vinales bounced back by qualifying third and finishing fifth in the sprint race. However, he faced challenges in the main race and couldn't maintain the anticipated pace towards the end.

Alex Marquez – 6.5

Finishing ninth for Gresini Ducati, Marquez demonstrated a solid performance throughout the weekend and the grand prix. However, the Spaniard was not quite on par with his teammate.

Brad Binder – 6.5

After a disastrous qualifying session that saw Brad Binder knocked out in Q1, the official KTM racer significantly improved during the sprint, finishing in sixth place. Despite facing more challenges in the main race, Binder managed to advance once more, securing a spot within the top ten.

Aleix Espargaro – 6

Aleix Espargaro couldn't match his speed from Barcelona and finished ninth, earning the last point in the sprint race. Both Espargaro and Aprilia faced difficulties with cornering during the Italian MotoGP weekend. In the main race, Espargaro ended up in 11th place, unable to boost his performance significantly.

Raul Fernandez – 6

Raul Fernandez ended the race in the same position he began, delivering a steady yet uneventful performance in the grand prix. This followed an earlier result where he did not earn any points in the sprint race.

Marco Bezzecchi – Rating: 5

Marco Bezzecchi, who was a leading competitor around this time last year, continues to struggle with the GP23, as evidenced by his performance at Mugello.

Miguel Oliveira – 5

Miguel Oliveira's aspirations for a points finish in the sprint race were dashed early on due to a collision with Fabio Quartararo, leading to a crash. Although it was a challenging race for him, Oliveira managed to earn some points but ended up being the lowest-ranked among the four Aprilia riders.

Alex Rins – 5

Just as he did in Catalunya, Alex Rins outpaced his team-mate Fabio Quartararo during qualifying but then lost positions, dropping from 10th to 13th in the sprint. On Sunday, Rins continued to fall back, although he managed to secure a point for Yamaha.

Jack Miller – 4

The factory KTM rider had a disappointing weekend, falling short of the expected performance levels especially after losing his spot for the 2025 season.

Pol Espargaro – 6

The KTM test rider delivered an impressive performance, ending up only three-tenths of a second behind Miller.

Fabio Quartararo – 4

During the sprint race, Fabio Quartararo was struck by Miguel Oliveira, causing him to crash and withdraw from the event. This incident came after a challenging qualifying round for the 2021 world champion. Unfortunately, the main race didn't fare much better for Quartararo, as he ended up finishing without scoring any points and trailed the race winner by more than 30 seconds.

Johann Zarco – 4

Trailing closely behind his compatriot, Johann Zarco spearheaded Honda's efforts, yet it was another unfortunate event for the Japanese brand.

Luca Marini – 4

Luca Marini finished last among those who completed the race, trailing behind Aprilia's test rider Lorenzo Savadori during the sprint. This result adds to Marini's challenging debut season with Honda. However, in the grand prix, Marini managed to surpass Savadori, ending up just under a second behind Zarco.

Lorenzo Savadori – 4

Joan Mir – 3

Joan Mir's difficult 2023 season continued as he crashed out of another race, this time on the first turn of the seventh lap.

Augusto Fernandez – 3.5

An irate Augusto Fernandez made an early return to the pit lane due to problems with his RC16 bike. The Spanish rider, under significant pressure, seemed visibly upset with his team as he walked down the pit lane.

Takaaki Nakagami – 3

Similar to Mir, Takaaki Nakagami's race concluded when he crashed, losing control of the front wheel at turn 12.
