Binder’s Aragon Rollercoaster and Miller’s Last-Lap Drama: A MotoGP Weekend to Remember
Brad Binder exclaimed, "I ended up with another rolling burnout!" while Jack Miller mentioned being "outmaneuvered by Rins."
Brad Binder shared, "I had devised a solid strategy last night to prevent spinning out at the start…"
Brad Binder experienced his best MotoGP weekend in terms of points since the first race of the season in Qatar, securing fourth and sixth places at the Aragon Grand Prix.
Despite losing traction at the start in both events, he managed to secure seventh place, which was notably on the less contaminated half of the grid.
During the central segments of the race, Binder found himself trailing behind newcomer Pedro Acosta. This contest for third place intensified following a clash between Alex Marquez and Francesco Bagnaia, occurring with just 5 laps remaining.
However, Acosta remained slightly beyond grasp.
"Last night, I devised a solid strategy to avoid spinning off the start, but I ended up doing a rolling burnout just like the day before!" Binder said with a smile.
"I successfully navigated through and overtook a few competitors. Avoiding errors was challenging since the front tire was overheating behind others until the final quarter of the race."
"I attempted to compensate on corner exits since entering them at high speed wasn't an option due to the front overheating. However, this strategy backfired eventually, leaving the left side of the tire completely worn out."
"I did everything I could to overtake Pedro, but there was no way through from behind!
"Besides that, we took some really promising strides this weekend. We experimented with altering the bike's balance, and it appeared to be effective throughout the duration of the race."
Team member Jack Miller had a strong start, moving up from 15th position on the grid to eighth by the conclusion of the first lap. However, the Australian quickly joined the group of riders facing challenges with rear tire traction.
Falling to ninth place behind Alex Rins in the final lap, he subsequently became one of three racers penalized with a 16-second addition to their race time due to tyre pressure infractions, which resulted in him being relegated to 15th place.
"Quite an extended competition," Miller commented. "The track conditions were once again varied; it's been predominantly dirty throughout the weekend, yet today it appeared more slippery."
"I gave it everything I had. Struggling with the [medium] rear tire led to a significant highside incident right as I was coming out of the final turn."
"I found my groove and focused on maintaining it. Transitioning from the edge to the center of the tyre presented several challenges, but I managed to pull through successfully."
"I didn't make any errors during the race, but I found it challenging to keep up with the competitors ahead of me. We'll continue to persevere."
Delighted to secure a spot in the top ten, but it was a bit of a letdown to be overtaken by Rins on the back straight during the final lap. I tried my utmost to navigate with precision, yet a poor acceleration allowed him to surpass me on the back straight.
"We'll return to Misano once more."
This weekend, the addition of test rider Pol Espargaro as a wild card entry will increase KTM's representation to five.
"Now we head to Misano, also with an eye on the upcoming test and Pol's wildcard entry, which will provide us with valuable insights for the future," stated team manager Francesco Guidotti.
The inaugural Misano MotoGP races will commence with Binder trailing Acosta by three points, as Acosta occupies the fifth position in the world championship standings.
Miller is on the verge of being officially announced as a Pramac Yamaha rider, possibly during the team's local Italian races. He currently ranks 15th, just three points behind Monster Yamaha's Fabio Quartararo.
