Bastianini’s Thrilling Comeback at Italian MotoGP: Overtakes, Challenges, and a Favorite Moment
Enea Bastianini on Marc's Pass: "I thought, 'this can't be right'"
Enea Bastianini shares his preferred maneuver from the Italian MotoGP.
Despite not having enough time to compete against his teammate Francesco Bagnaia for the victory, Enea Bastianini made a significant impact during Ducati's local MotoGP event.
A regrettable incident involving Jorge Martin in the sprint resulted in Bastianini being forced out of the race. Nonetheless, in the main event, the Italian managed to outperform Martin.
Before overtaking Martin, Bastianini spent a significant portion of the race holding back Marc Marquez, eventually reclaiming third position with just three laps remaining.
Bastianini embarked on a pursuit of Martin, who had an advantage of eight tenths of a second over Bastianini as they entered the last lap. However, this lead proved insufficient when the Ducati team member clocked an impressive lap time of 1 minute and 46.2 seconds, catching up to the front-runner and surpassing him in the race's concluding turn.
When asked about his preferred overtake, Bastianini stated, "Definitely Martin because it secured me second place. It was great as it wasn't something I had planned."
"In the final lap, I considered the possibility of overtaking him despite his 0.8 seconds lead. I managed to clock a remarkably quick lap time of 1 minute and 46.2 seconds."
"I managed to overtake him in the final corner. That was a solid move. Also, passing Marc was beneficial for me."
Bastianini's speed in the latter part of the race was superior to that of his competitors, an advantage he was unable to demonstrate during the sprint.
"Starting from Saturday, I managed to refocus," Bastianini explained, regarding his comeback against competitors like Marquez. "I felt a strong drive to push harder, not just for me but for everyone supporting me here."
"I had dozed off during a significant portion of the race, but as soon as Marc passed me, I mentally shut down and thought, 'no! This isn't right. That podium spot is mine'."
"I returned and cycled in a way I hadn't experienced before. It felt great."
