Bagnaia Triumphs in Intense Second Practice at 2024 San Marino MotoGP, Edges Out Marquez
2024 San Marino MotoGP: Francesco Bagnaia Edges Out Marc Marquez in Close Second Practice Session
Bagnaia Tops Friday's Leaderboard at Misano Following Tough Aragon GP the Previous Week
Current world titleholder Francesco Bagnaia topped the timesheets in Friday's practice session for the 2024 MotoGP San Marino Grand Prix, outpacing Marc Marquez.
The official Ducati racer has sustained minor injuries following his collision with Alex Marquez during the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend.
Following a consistent beginning to Friday's first practice session at Misano, Bagnaia surged ahead during a hectic second practice, clocking in at 1 minute 30.685 seconds, and leading the pack by 0.185 seconds.
Marc Marquez, riding for Gresini Ducati, secured the second spot once more during the afternoon session, while Jorge Martin, who leads the championship, finished in third place.
All four top competitors automatically advanced to Q2 in the qualifying session, thanks to Enea Bastianini moving up to fifth place in the final moments. Meanwhile, Yamaha's presence in Q2 is secured by Fabio Quartararo.
Pedro Acosta, a rider for Tech3 GASGAS, established the early lead within the first 10 minutes of the hour-long session.
The newcomer initially clocked a time of 1 minute 31.700 seconds, then bettered it to 1 minute 31.672 seconds.
Marc Marquez took the lead with approximately 35 minutes remaining, posting a time of 1 minute and 31.364 seconds. However, shortly after, Acosta reclaimed the top position with a time of 1 minute and 31.301 seconds.
As the last 10 minutes of the second practice session's time attack began, Marquez took the lead once more with a time of 1 minute 31.034 seconds.
Pramac's Martin broke into the 1 minute 30 second range for the first time this weekend, clocking a time of 1 minute 30.966 seconds.
However, this effort was insufficient to halt Bagnaia's momentum. The current world champion initially clocked a lap time of 1 minute 30.885 seconds on his factory Ducati with three minutes remaining, then improved his performance with a time of 1 minute 30.685 seconds on the subsequent lap.
This would ensure that Bagnaia remains at the top of the leaderboard as the race concluded.
Marquez managed to keep his second position from Martin, and his Pramac teammate Franco Morbidelli secured fourth place late in the race, overtaking Bastianini.
Acosta finished in sixth place after leading during Practice sessions. He was followed by Marco Bezzecchi from VR46, Maverick Vinales from Aprilia, Fabio Quartararo, who made it to Q2 for the first time since the Dutch Grand Prix in June, and Jack Miller from KTM.
Morbidelli's last-minute progress pushed Brad Binder out of the top 10, relegating him to Q1.
The KTM racer is set to compete against Aleix Espargaro from Aprilia, Pol Espargaro from KTM, and Alex Marquez from Gresini Ducati in the first qualifying session on Saturday morning.
Johann Zarco earned the highest ranking for Honda, finishing in 15th place. Meanwhile, Alex Rins faced challenges and couldn't keep up with his Yamaha teammate, Quartararo, who had a strong performance on Friday, leaving Rins in 17th place.
