Local favorite Francesco Bagnaia triumphs over Marc Marquez in the 2024 Italian MotoGP Sprint race, as championship frontrunner Jorge Martin suffers a crash, forcing him out of the competition.
World champion Bagnaia, who had failed to complete the last three Sprints, dominated from the beginning to the end, reacting promptly when Marquez momentarily reduced his lead to less than one second.
Newcomer Pedro Acosta marked his recent factory KTM agreement by securing third place following Martin's season-first Saturday crash.
In the initial phases, while trailing behind Bagnaia, Bastianini and Martin swapped the second position. However, Bastianini crashed following a collision with the Pramac racer as he attempted to overtake again at the peak of Turn 1.
The situation was subjected to an inquiry, with no additional measures implemented.
However, that same turn proved costly for Martin with just four laps remaining when, following Marquez's overtaking move, he lost control of the front and crashed, dropping out of third place.
Initially, Acosta fell behind his soon-to-be teammate Brad Binder, who made a quick start. However, once he managed to get past the South African, the 20-year-old started to rapidly catch up to Martin.
In the initial phase of the race, Miguel Oliveira and Fabio Quartararo collided and both were eliminated from the competition, with the Stewards deciding not to pursue any additional measures.
Every participant opted for the medium option for the front tire and the soft option for the rear
Bagnaia will face a three-position grid penalty for the race on Sunday (excluding the Sprint) due to impeding Alex Marquez's progress on Friday.
This results in him falling to the fifth position on the starting grid, allowing Maverick Vinales to advance to second place, just behind Martin, and Marc Marquez to join the front row.
In a historic moment during last year's Mugello sprint race, Brad Binder achieved a groundbreaking MotoGP speed, reaching 227.5 mph (366.1 km/h), a record that was equaled by KTM wild-card Pol Espargaro on the following Friday.
Updated regulations for tyre pressure in 2024 stipulate that competitors are required to maintain a minimum pressure of 1.8 bar in the front tyres, a decrease from the previous 1.88, for at least 60% of a Grand Prix race distance, up from the former requirement of 50%, or for 30% of a Sprint event.
If competitors do not achieve this minimum requirement in a Grand Prix, they will face a post-race time penalty of 16 seconds, or a reduced penalty of 8 seconds for Sprint or shorter races.
A formal testing session is scheduled to take place at Mugello on Monday, following the race.
