Aragon Victory Not Enough: Marc Marquez Admits Championship Hopes Still Distant Despite Win
Marc Marquez's hopes for the championship are still out of reach, even though he secured a win at the Aragon MotoGP.
Marc Marquez, who has won the World Championship eight times, clinched victory in the Aragon MotoGP. This win helped him cut down his points gap in the championship to 70. However, he believes he is still not close enough to be seen as a serious title contender.
Besides trailing Jorge Martin by 70 points, Marquez also lags 47 points behind Francesco Bagnaia, who has achieved the most wins in 2024 with seven Grand Prix victories and three Sprint race triumphs.
During the post-race press conference in Aragon, Marquez conceded, "No, we are quite distant," when questioned about his chances in the championship. "We keep losing more and more points. We are too far behind."
"Moreover, there are two riders who are more consistent than us, not just one."
"A single weekend won't transform our life. It will certainly benefit us, but it won't make a significant difference. We're too far behind to compete for the championship this year."
"However, our aim should be to compete for one of the top three spots, as that seems achievable. There are still many points up for grabs and numerous events that could occur, especially considering the unpredictable weather conditions like storms and rain in Asia."
"However, we continue to find joy in what we do, which is crucial for me, and we will strive to persist and compete with the leading contenders."
Highlighting the importance of maintaining consistency to compete for the championship, Marquez noted the atypical conditions at the Aragon round.
"This weekend has been fantastic, the atmosphere has been incredible," he remarked. "However, we need to stay grounded because the conditions were quite unique. Personally, I think the Red Bull Ring Grand Prix was more significant for me, as I felt great and was very competitive with the leading racers."
"The significance of this win is extremely high, and our next focus will be on achieving consistency. We need to analyze our performance during races, but I am aware that there will be weekends where we will face more challenges than others. Consistency will be crucial."
Marquez highlighted Enea Bastianini's situation as an example. Despite being considered a significant contender for the championship following his double victory at the British Grand Prix, Bastianini finished fifth in Aragon, having started from 14th place on the grid.
“We aim to replicate our performance in the future, but speed can vary from weekend to weekend— Enea [Bastianini] was quick at Silverstone — however, my main focus is on achieving consistency, which is the hardest aspect to master,” Marquez stated.
Jorge Martin, currently ahead in the championship by 23 points following the Aragon race, partially concurred with Marquez.
"The championship leader mentioned that Marc is currently distant in the standings, but noted that if Marc begins to secure victories in every race weekend, he could become a contender for the title."
"Just a couple of races back, Enea Bastianini was in contention for the title, then he wasn't. Now, Marc is showing his strength after Austria and here, proving he's undoubtedly one of the top riders on the grid who can compete for the championship."
