Aragon Triumph Not Enough: Marc Marquez Admits Championship Hopes Are Slim Despite MotoGP Victory
Marc Marquez's hopes for the championship remain subdued, even after his win in the Aragon MotoGP.
Marc Marquez, an eight-time World Champion, clinched a win at the Aragon MotoGP, narrowing his points gap in the championship to 70. Despite this achievement, he believes he remains too distant to be seen as a serious title challenger at this point.
Besides trailing Jorge Martin by 70 points, Marquez is also 47 points back from Francesco Bagnaia, who has the most wins in 2024 with seven Grand Prix victories and three Sprint race wins.
During the post-race press conference in Aragon, Marquez acknowledged, "No, we are far," when questioned about his chances in the championship. He added, "We keep losing more and more points. We are too far behind."
"There are actually two riders who are more consistent than we are."
"A single weekend won't transform our life. It can certainly benefit us, but it won't be a game-changer. We're too far behind to contend for the championship this season."
"Let’s aim to secure a spot among the top three. That’s a feasible target. There are still many points to be earned and numerous events to unfold, especially given the unpredictable weather conditions in Asia, with storms and rain being common."
"However, we continue to find joy in what we do, which is crucial for me, and we will strive to persist and compete with the leading individuals."
Highlighting the importance of maintaining consistency in the battle for the championship, Marquez noted the exceptional circumstances surrounding the Aragon round.
"This weekend has been fantastic, with an incredible atmosphere," he remarked. "However, we must stay grounded as the circumstances were quite unique. Personally, I found the Red Bull Ring GP to be more significant because I felt really strong and was performing at a level very close to the top competitors."
"The importance of this win is immense, and our next goal is to achieve consistency. We need to analyze our performance during the races, although I'm aware that there will be weekends where we face more challenges than usual. Consistency will be our second crucial factor."
Marquez highlighted Enea Bastianini's performance as an example. Bastianini was considered a strong contender for the championship following his double victory at the British Grand Prix. However, he only managed to finish fifth in Aragon after starting in 14th place.
Marquez stated, "Our aim is to replicate our performance in the future. While we can have a quick weekend, like Enea Bastianini did at Silverstone, my main focus is on achieving consistency, which is the hardest aspect to master."
Jorge Martin, who is ahead in the championship by 23 points following the Aragon race, somewhat concurred with Marquez.
The championship leader mentioned that Marc is currently not close, but added that if he begins to win every race weekend, he could become a competitor for the title.
“Just two races back, Enea Bastianini was a contender for the title but then fell out of the running. Now, Marc has shown his strength in Austria and here, proving he’s one of the top riders on the grid and capable of fighting for the championship.”
