Alex Marquez Denies Deliberate Collision with Francesco Bagnaia: ‘Not in My DNA or the Sport’s
Alex Marquez denies allegations: “I would never intentionally collide with another rider”
Marquez dismisses claims that he 'intentionally' collided with Francesco Bagnaia, stating, 'It's not in my nature, nor is it in the nature of this sport.'
Alex Marquez has issued a response after coming across certain comments following the Aragon MotoGP incident with Francesco Bagnaia on Sunday.
The duo were caught in a serious crash as Bagnaia tried to overtake the Gresini rider for a podium position, following a wide turn by Marquez.
The FIM Stewards concluded that 'no further action' was necessary because 'neither rider was found to be mainly at fault'.
However, Marquez appears displeased with Bagnaia's remarks implying that the Gresini rider maintained acceleration instead of steering clear of a collision.
"When I approached the next turn, which was turn 13, I could hear his engine revving up. He was accelerating, clearly attempting to make contact," Bagnaia explained to MotoGP.com.
"I was interested in examining the data… He kept the throttle open at 60 percent, 40 percent of the time until the crash occurred. I find this quite unusual for a rider."
Marquez shared a post on social media on Monday:
"Having reviewed several statements, I want to clarify the following points:"
"I would never intentionally collide with another rider, and I refuse to be accused of such behavior. It goes against my principles and the values of this sport."
"The key takeaway for me is the discussion I had with Pecco yesterday, and as far as I'm concerned, the matter is resolved."
"It's now time for me to rest and regain my strength so that I'm in top shape for Misano."
Marquez and Bagnaia were lucky to escape without major injuries and are set to return to the Misano circuit this weekend.
Marc Marquez, who is Alex's teammate and brother, clinched victory at the Aragon race. However, Jorge Martin's second-place finish has extended his lead over Bagnaia to 23 points.
