Vom Stadtflitzer zum Premium-SUV: Der Smart #5 bricht mit Tradition und setzt auf Größe und Luxus
The latest Smart vehicle is a high-end mid-size SUV
The rather sizable #5 makes its global debut
Do you recall the old Smart cars? Specifically, the Fortwo which, despite some chuckles, was actually quite a smart compact car for city driving? Ranging from 2.50 to 2.70 meters in length. However, that era has come to an end. The "new" Smart, in partnership with China's Geely, is moving towards larger models. After the release of models 1 and 3, it now introduces the #5.
The Smart #5, a creation of Mercedes-Benz, bears a notable resemblance to the EQB. This fifth model incorporates design features characteristic of the latest Smart vehicles, such as the panoramic halo roof, frameless doors, and compact overhangs. Its wheelbase has been extended to 2,900 mm, with the total length reaching 4,705 mm. For context, this places it in the size category of a Skoda Kodiaq.

The Smart #5 features distinct headlights at both the front and back, as well as the recognizable logo on the D-pillar. The two-toned mirrors and the rotating hub caps with centrally positioned Smart logos, which remain upright as the wheels turn, contribute to its luxurious appeal. A unique design element is the depiction of a cartoon panda surrounded by nature on the windshield of the Smart #5.
The Smart #5 Summit Edition comes packed with the unique Adventurers' Collection, blending multiple uses with elements such as an electric trailer hitch, underbody protection, roof racks, side steps, a side pocket, and a side ladder.
Intelligent Summit Series #5, 2024 Version
The latest #5 model introduces a sleek, spacious, and cutting-edge design to its cabin. A standout feature is the state-of-the-art Zero-Gravity seats that recline to 121 degrees, wrapped in leather and equipped with V-shaped curtain airbags, cushion airbags, and seat-integrated seatbelts. In the rear, passengers can enjoy leather seats with generous headroom measuring 1060 mm, complete with seat warmers, adjustable backrests, electric sunshades, and LED reading lights.
The First Class setting is a one-button comfort feature that also provides passengers with additional legroom. Accents such as oak wood and curved, elongated design features contribute to the (according to Smart) premium quality of the interior.
Additional standout features include an ambient lighting system offering a spectrum of 256 colors and the option to adjust the seats to create sleeping spaces equivalent to a king, queen, or single bed in the cabin. The entertainment setup boasts an integrated projector paired with a Sennheiser Signature Sound System, complete with 20 speakers.
Intelligent Item #5 (2024 Edition)
The retractable speaker comes equipped with ambient lighting that syncs up to the beat of the music, offering a combined sound and light experience. Furthermore, the vehicle boasts 34 storage compartments, a front trunk with a capacity of 72 liters, and a rear cargo space of 1530 liters.
At the heart of the interior lies an advanced Human Machine Interface (HMI). This setup includes a 25.6-inch augmented reality head-up display, a full-color 10.3-inch ultra-high-definition LCD dashboard, and twin 13-inch AMOLED 2.5K screens. The cutting-edge generative AI voice assistant delivers accurate responses to almost any query posed.
Smart's savvy avatars enable the person behind the wheel to command key features using just their voice. This includes managing phone calls and messages, controlling music and media, adjusting the climate, navigating, customizing personal settings, handling vehicle operations, and accessing online services. Leo, the brand new lion-themed avatar, guides the user through the controls.
Intelligent Issue Number Five (2024)
The 2021 model of the Mercedes EQB.
The vehicle employs cutting-edge AMD V2000 high-performance chips to achieve an exceptionally swift response time. These processors are excellently suited for rendering the vehicle's Low-Poly-smart-OS user interface, which operates on the Unreal Engine and handles real-time effects.
In contrast to the Mercedes EQB, the Smart #5 model features an 800-volt high-voltage platform. This vehicle's 100-kWh battery comes equipped with a Super-Charging capability (4C), allowing it to charge up to 70% in a mere 15 minutes (from 10% to 80%). The car boasts a driving range of more than 740 kilometers according to the CLTC, which is the Chinese testing cycle.
Additional from Smart:
A power outlet with a 220-volt capacity ensures endless adaptability when the vehicle is detached from the grid. Additionally, the vehicle comes equipped with various driving modes suitable for both on-road and off-road conditions, such as Adaptive, Sand, Snow, Mud, and Rock. The latest Smart #5 model is scheduled to launch and hit the European markets at the beginning of 2025.
