Volkswagen Unveils ID.Unyx: A New EV Sub-Brand Exclusively for China’s Electrified Future
Volkswagen has introduced a new sub-brand exclusively for the Chinese market, nested within its ID electric vehicle line.
On Wednesday, the car manufacturer unveiled plans for ID.Unyx, a range that will feature five electric vehicles by 2026, kicking off with a crossover vehicle styled like a coupe bearing the same moniker. These will form part of the 34 fresh models the company intends to roll out worldwide by 2030, paying special attention to the Chinese market to strengthen its foothold in the globe's biggest automotive market.
Stefan Mecha, who leads Volkswagen's brand in China, stated that smartly connected electric vehicles like the latest ID.Unyx are essential for drawing in younger, trend-conscious demographics and keeping current clients loyal to the Volkswagen name. However, Mecha did not provide reasons for the necessity of incorporating these fresh models into a separate sub-brand under the ID electric vehicle range. Additionally, he did not clarify if they would be built on the same Modular Electric Drive (MEB) platform that other ID vehicles utilize.
Volkswagen's ID.Unyx Model
Volkswagen announced that the inaugural model of the ID.Unyx series was crafted in a newly established complex located in Hefei, China, where it will also be produced. The design sets itself apart from other ID vehicles, featuring distinct sharp lines along the sides, a textured hood, and intricate designs on both the front and back bumpers.
Volkswagen's ID.Unyx crossover coupe will be available in two versions: one with a single motor powering the rear wheels at 281 horsepower, and another with dual motors for all-wheel drive at 335 horsepower. Both variants will utilize a 77.0-kWh battery. In the CLTC range tests, VW anticipates that the single-motor variant will reach up to 385 miles on a full charge.
The origin of the ID moniker dates to 2016, marking its first appearance with the reveal of the inaugural ID prototype at the Paris motor exhibition. This prototype gave the world its first glimpse of what would become the ID.3, an electric hatchback with five doors, which later made its debut in Europe as the premier vehicle in the ID series. Volkswagen has since adopted a combination of numerical identifiers, evident in vehicles such as the ID.3 and the ID.4 SUV – the latter being pivotal to the company's electric vehicle strategy in the United States – as well as actual names, exemplified by the ID.Buzz van, all under the unifying ID prefix.
Volkswagen ID.Unyx Concept Vehicle
Volkswagen is aiming to enhance its international ID sub-brand by introducing electric vehicles tailored for the Chinese market. The company has already revealed plans for an exclusive sub-brand for China, named ID.UX, and intends to launch five models by 2027. During the 2024 Beijing auto show, Volkswagen presented a prototype vehicle known as the ID.Code, which is designed to appeal to the preferences of Chinese consumers.
Volkswagen is in the process of creating a new electric vehicle framework tailored specifically for the Chinese market, known as the China Main Platform (CMP), set to launch in 2026. Furthermore, the German car manufacturer is collaborating with China's Xpeng to advance electric vehicle technology. This adds to their ongoing partnerships with China's SAIC and FAW, collaborations that stemmed from a government mandate necessitating foreign car producers to join forces with domestic companies.
